From the Herald:

“That’s the NFL. You play a game at this time in the year you’re either euphoria or it’s a crashing landing. So for us it was a crash landing,” Belichick said. “A year ago this time it was the other feeling. It’s one or the other. There’s no in between and there’s certainly no soft landing. A season that’s very much alive with great hopes and expectations and energy suddenly crashes and it’s over.

“That’s the way it is and it’s going to be for every team but one this year. That’s the NFL. It’s not going to change, that’s the way it is. Unfortunately, that’s where we were last night. That’s where we are today. It stopped. It’s over. We’re on to next year. “

This was the best

Bill Belichick on next season: "I'll be here. You'll have to deal with me again next year. I know that's disappointing for a lot of you."

There IS something slightly Nixonian about that guy. Just sayin' :D

So weird to see such a humorous and interesting press conference from BB. I am intrigued to see what he is going to do this offseason. I think it is time for him to throw money at a new deep threat. We all know how successful the long ball was in 2007 and for that matter 2008 and I am sure BB is aware of it. I think taking a hefty amount of money and throwing it at a Mike Wallace is the right move. A vertical threat to stretch the field for Gronk, Hernandez and Lloyd (given that the 2 formers can stay healthy) will be huge for this offense and also makes the opposing D stay honest unlike the Ravens last night who took away the middle of the field leaving our outside WR's (Hello Wes Welker!) to do the workload.

We also know very well how much of a fan BB is of the long ball. He has spent early round draft picks on numerous quick and fast receivers (See: Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson, Brandon Tate, Taylor Price) and it may be time to throw money at an established WR.

I don't know that a speed burner wideout is necessarily what we need, so much as a

strong, physical, athletic, get off the line without being dominated and then go up and get the ball

type receiver.

I hoped that Lloyd would be that guy. He does make catches in traffic, but not like Bolden does, for example. Gronk is that type of guy from a TE position, perhaps Ballard too, but we need another from a WR position. And those attributes probably won't come from a new draftee, unless there is some AJ Green-type guy that mysteriously falls to us.

The 2013 campaign's already started for many in foxboro, which is how it should be. I'm not sure how many days it'll be for the coaching staff to get back on the job, and I'm not sure the rhythm for the scouts. I'm not deep into it like that... something tells me a few lights will be on tonight, but I might be wrong. Whatever the rhythm, like the hoodie said, it's on to next season.

Tortured myself and watched some highlights on NFLN, but it wasn't as painful as 07 or 11... because we well and truly lost this one, and of course we didn't lose at quite the highest level. We just weren't as good last night as the Ravens, as BB said. There was no trapped ball against a helmet. The outcome was in question most of the game but we were on the low end of the probability of winning for much of it... a lackluster outing.

So on to next season, searching again for that elusive spark... remember there are people that never even get this kind of season, it would be their high point... and remember only very few teams' fans ever see the dominance we showed in 01-04... And I'd love some book ends on the other end of Tom's career... Remember that Montana and Young have been gone for a whole generation, and the 9ers are finally back with a second-year kid... and one day we'll have to watch the first post-Brady season (yikes,) and eat right and exercise so we can watch season after season, in the wilderness if need be, enduring until that next championship.

:) We still have a few more years of Brady left, and probably many more of Belichick. We're still in that run we may one day look back at as the era when the ring was always in our grasp... let's not take that part for granted as we look toward next year.

Right now, I would trade Demaryious Thomas for Devin Mccourty. I ight even trade McCourty for Dez Bryant, as big a headcase as he is. The Patriots really do need one of those guys.

That would be trading one problem for another.

I would do it as painful as it is to say. Talent wise he is has just about propelled himself to the elite category.. why would jerry Jones do this though? Bryants antics are normal every day life over there. He knows he has value and would be looking for something more than just preety good McCourty. It would be something insane like a 2nd rounder and McCourty.

Does anyone know if Bellichick was asked about or if a reporter brought up Pollard and him being "coincidentally" involved in the major injury of a 4th Patriots player?

I honestly wonder what he, coaches and some of the other Patriots think of it. I refuse to believe it's just a coincidence now.

A Demaryius Thomas is exactly what this offense needs. Once Welker and Hernandez got locked down, nobody was able to consistently beat man coverage.

How is McCourty a problem?

I don't think he's saying McCourty is a problem. It's just that by trading him to solve another problem only creates a new problem somewhere else. IMO the root of the problem IS defense. I don't think the Pats need to spend as much effort or money trying to find a guy to stretch the field as much as they need to address the Achilles heal that has plagued this team since 05. Defenses wouldn't have such an easy time shutting down Brady in the playoffs if they had to worry about their own offense. The Pats need a bonafide passrush threat and bigger, physical players in the secondary.

We need a big physical WR but we need to fix our secondary .Between the two I would give that more priority. We need some veteran presence on D. mayo and wilfork are vets but not in the same mould as rodny/bruschi/vrabel . Those guys had a swagger about them before and after the game. Anyone thing rodney would take all this suggs and pollard talk quietly?

I think BELICHICK CONFIRMS HE WILL BE BACK is a big headline.

Further, he again said he plans to be here a long time - "until I'm told not to."

There is always speculation that this might be the year.

"See, they hired Daboll so when Belichick retires this year, and Josh McDaniels becomes head coach..."

No more rumors - Belichick is coming back.

I said after the 2nd major player injury (Welker) that we should just play with a 52 man roster by acquiring him and sitting him on the bench. Then we had the Gronk injury and now this year, Ridley.

Of course I was kidding, but there's some truth to the ridiculousness of the idea at the same time.

On a serious note---no, I do not think it is intentional, but I do think that he plays with a reckless abandon that many other players do not necessarily have to the same degree.

The Welker injury was a freak of nature, and probably due to the field. The Ridley injury was simply due to a great hit, so I really don't think he's "headhunting" our specific players.

The whole entire problem is that either one of those players are guaranteed to be able to come in here and pick up this kind of complicated timing based, route tree system, with proper adjustments/reads, etc.

That's entirely one of the biggest reasons why we passed on Bryant in the first place (3x). The rumor was that he had to have special plays drawn up and simplified for him even at Oklahoma St.

Since my wife is a Cowboys fan I have to watch most of their games (puke)...One of the biggest problems that I still see with Bryant is that he just isn't very bright. He often miscommunicates with Romo, leaving him out to dry and running the wrong route.

It comes down to the same thing with a guy like Wallace. Living here in Pittsburgh I am unfortunately stuck watching a lot of their games too, and often hear all of the talk radio + news reports etc. He also doesn't seem to be the brightest guy. Both of those 2 guys can't adjust enough. They can't read defenses enough. They take plays off. They don't block in the run game enough...

It's also one of the reasons why this team doesn't have a good track record with drafting WR's. There just is no guarantee that they will be in the right place at the right time, and that they will be dependable in the bigger moments.

Unless they hit a homerun right out of the draft on someone, I think that Belichick will always want to choose the kind of guy who is smarter, rather than talented. That is also why we were linked very strongly to Reggie Wayne in last year's offseason, and it's also why he was the guy who I wanted. He has proven himself to have all of the "Belichickian" type intangibles needed for this offense, and still offered something in what you are looking for...a strong, smart, WR who can draw attention and make the big play. Unfortunately, he decided to turn down more money to stay in Indy.

I think that all of you guys have great points in needing the kind of WR that has been a yearly need for awhile now. I too, would like that guy.

The problem is that I'm just not entirely convinced that:

1. That guy is realistically obtainable and a "sure thing" for this complex offense

2. Belichick even sees it that way (we'll know soon enough, via his choices in the draft and free agency)

It's hard to argue with the success that we've had. I think that people are forgetting that our offense is extremely potent, especially with a healthy Gronkowski. It could be argued that we'd have at least another SB win with his health last year. It's also why they resigned him to a major contract.

This offense is putting pts up on average at a clip of close to 35+, and that's been for 3 straight years now. We've beaten plenty of "good, physical" teams before with this method. Since 2007 they've historically had 3 of the NFL's top 5 offenses in the history of the game...

Brady has taken this team to the AFCCG (or better) in 7 of 12 seasons. That's almost 2/3rds of the time with a huge sample size as far as NFL terms go. This system gives them a legitimate shot every single year.

You can't plan for injuries, as much as we try to. At least not for guys like Gronk anyway. Even 5 TE depth signings cannot be replicated due to Gronk just not being able to be replaced.

The running game has been addressed and rejuvenated. The defense has been addressed and completely rebuilt. We wanted first round picks spent? Check..how about 2 in last year's first round, both front seven players? We saw a great season in the offensive line from Light's replacement, Solder. We saw an improvement to the center position (no more Koppen failures on bullrushes, right?). We signed Mankins long term. They fought through the adversity of losing Brian Waters due to his...whatever it was.

They locked up the 2 young TE's in the offseason through 2017/2018. They paid 10 million to Welker for the franchise tag. They were masterful in their cap management, not only now, but for the future--as always.

They have put themselves in position to compete in the NFL's biggest games every single year. The problem is, there are 31 other teams too, and the competition is very good come January and February. We aren't going to win them all.

And yet it somehow leads us back to the same question about the lack of the "take the top off" young, physical, super smart, hard working WR with 4.3 speed and hands like Steve Largent. There has got to be a good reason as to exactly "why" this can't be achieved, or "won't" be achieved. I am not 100% convinced that it is something that Belichick feels is a viable move, either for the reasons listed in my previous post, or due to salary cap implications--maybe it's just as simple as needing to find that player in the draft, and that's where they keep failing?

Or maybe the team is actually getting better in many areas, while competing every single year at the top level, all while setting themselves up for current and future salary cap structure to be one of the best every single season?

Like I said, we will know soon enough. Either the "problem" (as we fans see it) will continue to be addressed this offseason, or they'll continue to try and improve with what they have and hopefully also have the fate of luck roll their way again.

One way or another, it's simply not as easy as it looks. There's an excellent chance that we'd have to get rid of Welker in order to try and gamble on that deep threat that everyone clamors for, just due to cost efficiency. I'm not sure that is the best idea.
