Wasn't he supposed to replace Welker? ? ? ?

They signed a 226-pound tight end with one college TD?

There must not be a lot of TE's willing to compete to be the fourth TE behind Gronk/Hernandez/Fells.

He will get paid and it beats sitting around the farm.

I was considering becoming a professional OTA/TC body. It sounds good...get the snot knocked out of you for a couple of months, heal for ten and do it again. Unfortunately I didn't think of this until I turned 54. ;)

Re: And then there were...

Damn, I actually had high hopes for him for some unknown reason. Oh well...

Me too. I thought he could be a nice possession guy.

Congratulations, Ochocinco, you weren't the first one cut. :D

I heard Peyton went around Gillette making the manning face at everyone. Eventually, they felt bad for him and decided to give him his receiver.

We've been told Anthony Gonzalez was accepted into Stanford's MBA program and chose school over trying to make the Pats Public Listing from Stanford People Search

Interesting if true, and a good choice. Given how much wear and tear Gonzalez had and how limited any career was likely to be, moving on to a top MBA program at age 27 makes sense. Good luck to him.

The Globe has posted it's current projected depth chart at the position along with some reasoning for the positioning:

Projecting the Patriots receivers depth chart - Extra Points - Boston.com

Reiss has a somewhat similar breakdown.

It's interesting how much Gonzalez out of the way clears up the picture:

- Welker, Lloyd, Gaffney and Slater seem set
- Ebert is battling Edelman for the backup slot role, with Edelman having a big edge in experience and Ebert likely going to the PS if possible
- Branch, Ochocinco and Stallworth are battling for probably 1 position or at most 2, depending on whether the Pats keep 6 or 7 WRs. Like Edelman, Branch has an advantage in experience, familiarity, and rapport with Brady.

Re: And then there were...

Well, I don't even know how many we have now, but one less WR.

Gonzalez didn't make it to TC.

I never thought he would make it through TC anyways...really sad that injuries robbed this guy of being a decent receiver....Good Luck Anthony

Bummer. Gonzalez, a legitimate 1st round talent once upon a time, was my dark horse. When healthy, he's big, fast, and looks mean as hell.

Slater will be getting very few reps at WR again this year....the guy is an incredible ST player and that is where he will be primarily used I would imagine. The WR competition is AWESOME this year and I am psyched to watch it unfold. Gaff, Stallworth, Branch, and Johnson will be fighting it out. Really pulling for Stallworth and Gaff....Johnson probably still won't be getting the playbook and Branch is getting pretty darned old and slower. See Welk, Lloyd, Gaffney, and Stallworth at this point......Ebert will be on PS this year learning the ropes!

He was only brought in to cleanse him of all those years in Indy. Kind of a baptism that will allow him to get into heaven. He never intended to stay and the Pats were just doing him a favor.

So what's the cap hit, if any?

Random fact:
Pats WR Matt Roark completed a 15 yard pass to Melillo in Kentucky's final game last season.

So what's the cap hit, if any?
He got a $15K workout bonus, so the cap hit would only be whatever portion of that he may have earned. The rest of his deal was just $701K in unguaranteed salary, so that is the cap savings at the least.

the sound you hear is Chad screaming with joy from his double commode.

Re: And then there were...

Another blocking TE for whatever drills they're running in the next OTA?

He's 6-foot-2 inch, 226 pounder ... I don't think he's a blocker.
