Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

What was up with the first half "driving the qb in to the ground" call on the Brady pick? If they called that against us for the same exact play I would have been screaming at the tv.

I missed it on sunday and tonight. I still dont understand what the hell happened there

Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

No one touch Brady!

Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

randy cross is an idiot...taunting for high stepping? Players do it all the time and i never see it called

I agree; but I was surprised to see Reiss writing the same thing:

4. Hernandez and the high-step. Opinion -- The NFL's rules on unsportsmanlike conduct should be reviewed to eliminate the inconsistency of what unfolded Sunday. If Stevie Johnson gets a flag for lifting his shirt to reveal a shirt that says "Happy New Year!" and Aaron Hernandez isn't penalized for showing up the Bills with a high-step into the end zone, something is wrong. Bills players were rightfully steamed at Hernandez.

I dont recall where (NFLN probably) but someone said the new rule this year is that after an Int the QB is immediately declared a defenseless player.

I see a difference in a player responding after a play is over by taunting or making some premeditated act (words written on shirt) then a player high-stepping it to the end zone. Has there ever been an incident that a player was flagged for taunting while the football is in play. I have seen Deshawn Jackson multiple times "taunting" and not being called.

I don't care what anyone says; QB's not in the top tier do not get those calls.

You can imagine how frustrating it is for the Bills to see those, when they need everything to go perfectly anyway to just have a chance against a team like the Pats.

True, but it is what it is; there's even a term for it: the Michael Jordan Rule. I don't like it, but it happens in every sport. Pitchers like Greg Maddux and Curt Schilling got wider strike zones because they were known for their accuracy; Michael Irvin never got called for offensive pass interference; Darrelle Revis gets away with far more than no-name Pats defensive backs do; etc., etc.

I think it is worth pointing out that the NFL did address players going after opponents during a turnover long before the incorrectly named 'Brady Rule' (which was made after injuries to Carson Palmer, Brian Griese, and ironically Ben Roethlisberger [I say ironically because it seems like Steeler fans are the ones that complain most about that rule change]), the NFL reacted to a cheap (but legal) shot by Warren Sapp in 2002 that miraculously did not curtail Clifton's NFL career. Even more ironic is that much of the fan reaction at the time was 'hey, it was a legal hit; blame the NFL for not making it against the rules'.

As for Hernandez I was really surprised they didn't throw a flag. I recall BB saying something to him as soon as he came to the sideline; I'm sure it was about how perilously close he came to drawing an unnecessary penalty.

Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

I know, I just heard that. Give me a break. Sometimes they high step to avoid tacklers diving at their feet. It absolutely should not be a penalty. Good lord.

Agreed, it is not a penalty. However, AH was not high stepping to avoid a tackle. He was doing it to taunt the Bills' defender. There is an argument to be made that taunting of any kind needs a rule.
Sorry for those who like this kind of stuff (not to say that is you BC), however, this has no business on BB's Patriots. Part of our success is based on a higher level of execution and maximum efficiency. We out 'execute and efficient' our opponents even when they are the more talented team. This kind of activity is antithesis to that and the Patriot way. Hopefully AH got straightened out on this. Further, if he feels the desperate need to do this, he'll have plenty of time to do it when his contract is up and he is playing for the Bills or Raiders or etc etc. However, if '85' can come here, lose the antics of the past and adopt the Patriot way, any player should be able to.

Interesting moment when watching the replay (that I missed when I watched it Sunday). In the 2nd quarter Fitzpatrick threw a 20 yard sideline strike to a receiver (the Patriot sideline). Arrington had pretty good coverage (and Chung was nearby). It was a very good pass but Arrington may have had a play on it......but he didn't turn to look for the ball. I'm pretty sure BB, who was right next to the catch, yelled "turn back and look for the ball!".

"You should be excited... when you make a play."

Well, he obviously wasn't on the play but can you imagine refs coming out to clarify that only certain kinds of high-stepping are ok? I can see a lot of needless explanations and pissed off people. Doubt it's worth it.

And if the Bills were offended by it, that's pretty pathetic, man.

I agree, I think it could have been flagged for taunting because he was doing it right in front of a Bills defender... I was really afraid they would call it (i.e. same way how they call ball spiking in front of an opposing player after a TD). Stupid thing had they called it but I wouldn't have been surprised. It's crazy how much softer the NFL has become over the last few years.

Lighten up. High-stepping and a high level of execution are not mutually exclusive. See Sanders, Deion. I hate when people try to characterize the "Patriot Way" as acting like a faceless drone Boy Scout. You can have fun, have a personality, and occasionally even show up the opponent (although I don't think that's what Hernandez was doing) and still be a great Patriot.

Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

Just finished going through the 1st quarter and here are the significant events I noticed defensively:

1st drive:
4th and 1 from their own 45ish. Fake punt. 1st down. Yuck, but well executed by them.

Next play Molden is looking up for the ball, the receiver slows down, Moldon runs in to him as they both try for the ball at the 4 yard line. Pass interference. Should've been incidental at best.

2 plays later Love spins and ends up blocking Chung from making a tackle on Choice. TD. Just ugly.

2nd drive:
Molden caught playing 10 yards off of Hagan. 1st down.

Sack makes it 2nd and 13. Molden once again playing 8 yards off Hagan, lets him make a 9 yard reception. A trend seems to be appearing...

Johnson drops the ball, they go for it on 4th and 4 from our 31. Nate Jones trys to bump Johnson at the line and completely wiffs which gives Johnson an easy catch for the 1st down. Can't commit like that if you aren't going to hit him!

2nd and 6 from the 18, Arrington playing 7 yards off Johnson and doesn’t even turn around to start chasing him until the ball is being thrown and Johnson already has half a yard on him. Ihedigbo not near close enough to help. TD. A nice throw, but poor, poor play by Arrington.

3rd drive:
Chandler completely open, 6 yard gain.

2nd and 4 Fletcher gets absolutely burned by Martin, 13 yard gain.

Jones burned by someone (couldn’t see) for another 1st down.

Fletcher burned and no help from McCourty or Chung nearby. 23 yard gain by Roosevelt. They just threw with impunity on us. We truly couldn't stop a nosebleed on this drive.

Anderson and Warren let Spiller slip through for a 10 yard gain.

They run a pick route and Fletcher can’t switch fast enough, he slips by and then Chung, Arrington, Ihedigbo and Jones all try to pat him on the back on his way in to the end zone. TD. Right up the middle. Was a nice play, and should've gotten them a first down, not a touchdown.

It was just sickening to watch that again. However, looking back over it, it's mostly fixable. In my opinion we've gotten better as the year has gone on (maybe not as noticable statwise, and certainly set back at times due to injury) and I feel confident that with two weeks of rest and preparation, we can put together the 3 best games of the season and do something special. Expecially knowing what is coming up in the next 3 quarters :D

I thought the celebrations of a few years back with the ball as a prop were getting obnoxious, but high stepping is not something to get worked up over. Because next it will be spikes. And then showing any enthusiasm at all. I LIKE that Aaron is young, enthusiastic and basks a bit in awesomeness. Gronk too.

Re: Pats/Bils game on NFLN replay now

Taunting is the stupidest rule in the NFL. You make a play and beat a man if it's your choice to rub it in his face than that's your prerogative. Classless it may be but it does nothing to spoil the spectacle of the game.

Slowing down to dance is an odd way to "avoid tacklers". If he had just run into the endzone, no one would even have come near him. Dancing while waving the ball could have led to a touchback if the DB knocked the ball out of his hand (fumble through the endzone).

Good grief, I said "sometimes". I didn't say that is what he was doing!

Was Jets/Dolphins not chosen for NFL Replay?
