End of an era at Penn State.

So you would you be okay with a law stating that, if you have any suspicion that a felony has occurred, regardless of whether or not you actually witnessed it, you are legally required to report it to the police? Because that has law of unintended consequences written all over it.

Fair enough - Paterno may not have witnessed anything, but people involved in this did. That's not a suspicion, that's direct knowledge. In that case, yes, I think the law should punish people for failing to report something of this nature. On a suspicion? No. But if you witness something. Sure, yes, it should be your moral AND legal responsibility to report that.

I'll pass on such a notion, thanks.

There's certainly precedence for it - teachers, doctors, social workers, etc. would all have a legal obligation to report a crime of this nature.

There are precedents for a lot of things. That doesn't make those precedents right.

on a personal note...

I would've been at Penn State yesterday through tomorrow for a conference, if not for my 4th eye surgery since Aug. 31. I'm not an original Pennsylvanian, but I've lived in PA long enough to see that Paterno was the most recognizable person in the state, sort of a Santa Claus figure. The psychological devastation to locals is hard to overstate. For just one example, a friend is worried this will trigger an episode of depression in her father, who attends a church built with Paterno money.

I'm not a "get involved" type of person but if I saw what McQueary did the minimum I would do is get to the nearest phone and call 9-1-1. It's unimaginable that someone wouldn't. Would I put a stop to it myself ? That's tougher although if I were McQueary's size I would like to think I would. But someone who can't be bothered to call 9-1-1 immediately is sub human.

hey.....maybe penn state will start winning again

If you're trying to argue that seeing a 10 year old boy get raped and doing nothing about it is "right", I'm pretty sure you'll lose that argument.

You are allowed your opinion. History shows that most people, in fact, would fall under "sub human" according to your standards, even those who generally proclaim that they'd do just what you are saying they all should.

This is a very sensitive and volatile topic. If you're going to try to brand me this way by twisting what I've written instead of having a rational and reasoned discussion on the issue, find some others to discuss this with.

I don't believe that.

I think more than 50% wouldn't take action themselves in terms of beating the sh!t out of the guy and rescuing the kid. But I don't believe for a second that most wouldn't call 9-1-1. I absolutely don't believe that. For way lesser crimes ? I believe that. But not for something like this.

I'm sorry to inform you, but I didn't do anything other than re-state exactly what you had flippantly & thoughtlessly posted. I know that's not what you meant.

It happens all the time.

No you're lying, because I never mentioned whether not reporting the activities was either right or wrong.

We're done with this discussion. I'll not have people lying about my position on such a sensitive subject.

I'd like to ask: How on earth are these Penn State kids rioting in SUPPORT of him? I mean.... I just don't get it.

They're too dumb to know that they are destroying the brand on which they will rely to get a job when they graduate. Dumb and dumber.

What some fail to realize is that in 2001 Penn State had a horrible season at 5-6....Going into 2002 the team was trying to get better

The last thing Paterno wanted to do at that time is cause a major disruption off the field in what appeared to be a rebuilding process and knowing that a big investigation into Child Rape was going to bring more than a losing record to State College.

So IMO he kept it all hush hush while trying to instill life back into the Nittany Lions and let that animal Sandusky continue his horrific fantasies.

IMO Paterno is just as guilty as the guy who did this crime

Paterno is an accomplice IMO

In other words,Paterno put his football team ahead of the going ons a 10 year old boy for the sake of trying to build back up a winning team....football over child molestation....really disguisting to say the least.
