If Cameron Jordan and JJ Watt are both around at 17....

Watt gets my vote. Based on bowl game/highlight video's/combine results, it appears as if Watt is more explosive pass rusher than Jordan. Besides, I think I have a better chance of guessing who BB likes if I go with draft prospect with name starting with letter "M" or "W". I don't think many draft experts had the Patriots selecting McCourty last year.

JJ hands down.

But, JJ's agent is TomCondon, who Patriots hate to work with and have not worked with since Watson...

Will that stop Patriots in seleecting JJ if that is their man?

JJ Watt is a freak. Can't teach that size, agility, and explosion in a big man. So if he's there at #17 I take him. If only Cameron Jordan gets that far that's a nice consolation prize. Neither of em might last that long however. It all depends on how the draft plays out. BTW Wilfork was a 'one-gap' shooter type at Miami. And he transitioned nicely to become one of the NFL's best 3-4 NT so I don't see that as a weakness for a defensive lineman to have some explosion in their game and be able to get to the QB as well.

It's a no brainer.... JJ Watt.... Continuing the W theme with Warrens, Wilfork, Wright.... The cherry on top will be Wilkerson at 28 who's a beast in waiting!

I'd take Watt if he's there.

Using prospect rankings and only taking players still on the board when they pick i came away with:

#17-Aldon Smith OLB Missouri Watt was gone and Mike Pouncey was my other option. Pass Rush is the Patriots most dire need and although the pick is a risk the upside is there on all levels and they should try to turn him into a really good NFL OLB.

#28-Derek Sherrod OL Miss St. As much as I want Mankins back it isn't something they can count on. Sherrod was extremely productive, has all the measurables, and has the intellect and work ethic to get their system. I'd put him right into Mankins spot and believe he could fill the role well.

#33-Torrey Smith WR Maryland-Explosive and productive on a team with a limited passing attack. Another high quality person with a big athletic upside. He sounds highly coachable and could combine with Taylor Price to give them the downfield threats they need to fill out the Patriots offense.

#58-Stefan Wisniewski OL PSU-Koppen has been a mainstay on the Patriots OL but his career is on the backside and they need to start grooming a replacement now. Wisniewski is exactly the kind of player who could start at RG and develop into their future starting center imo.

The upside of these picks is their potential. They aren't the safest picks but 3 of the 4 have really good intangibles with big athletic potential and Wisniewski is a really safe pick imo. All address needs but DL isn't addressed, however Stroud may end up filling the role a guy like Phil Taylor would take if chosen, and with T. Warren coming back and their young DL showing some promise i'd go this route with both Watt and C. Jordan already gone when they were picking.

I also go with Watt. Wilkerson at #28 too. Fits a need AND takes him out of consideration for the Jests as well. A LOT of jets fans and mock drafts have them going after him. That would be a SOLID first round.

Also, the Wilkerson pick excites me due to the "Sum of its parts". Adding Wilkerson to a Line with Wilfork and Warren would make a very exciting, YOUNG defensive wall there allowing the back end of our D to make plays.

I like Jenkins from Clemson and I think we have a legitimate shot at him...I wouldn't be surprised by a CB like Williams from Texas

The scouting report on Aaron Williams is that he excelled at playing in the nickel, against the slot receiver. Reminds me of Asante Samuel, who worked his way up from being a nickel corner to a full fledged starter. Not a first rounder, in my opinion.

Realistically, I don't see the Pats taking either BUT since you asked, I would rather see JJ Watt drafted than Jordan. Watt is a specimen and has huge upside. With Jordan, I feel as if you know what you get and [while it is impressive] it doesn't inspire much excitement.

I'm with your original assessment neither one of these guys is a prototype Pats DE .. and I don't think BB is going to take either one of them.. call me crazy :bricks:

I'd say neither.

I can envision the Patriots either taking an elite prospect who inexplicably falls to 17, or a slight trade-down into the 20s range to target someone like Wilkerson or Heyward.

I am a little late on this thread but I am pretty sure I know what BB will do in this situation.

Trade down of course and when it is the Patriots next turn they will pick neither!

I'd say this would be a good problem to have, I can't envision a scenario where they will both be available especially with more teams playing 3-4.

The size difference is not all that great (Jordan, 6041 287 35 in arms -- Watt 6053 290 34 in arms) and they actually have a lot of similarities as players (both use hands well, they are good pash rushers and also can affect passing lanes when they can't get there, good aray of pash rush moves, strong lower body, good balance, good lateral movement and both play the run well. Both are durable). Jordan has experience in 3-4 and as DE while Watt less experience although he is more versatile (plays special teams, DT on four man line) and Jordan is stronger in the upper body. In terms of character, Watt has formed his own charity while Jordan was suspended one game in 2008 for DUI suspicion.

Too close to call at this time is my opinion but it would be a good problem to have while on the clock.
