Big Ben lost sponsorships because of his conduct. But the Steelers did not..

I'm sure there are some sponsors concerned that the teams biggest star may not play or be a part of the team. Owners want their star players to press the flesh with the corporate types. Brady makes appearances for Kraft all the time. His contract calls for him to do so.

Tiger Woods lost sponsorships because of his conduct, but the PGA did not...

Innacurate. Ticket sales, advertising revenue, sponsorship revenues are reduced when Tiger is not part of the event. However, lets stop short of saying Spikes absence would have the same level of financial impact as Tiger Woods.

With Tiger Woods' struggles and TV deal looming, PGA Tour faces a challenging course | jacksonville.com

Big Bobs discount furniture is unlikely to have an ad showing Bradon Spikes on one of their beds or couches. But it is highly unlikely that they will stop advertising on the Pats website even if Spike becomes the biggest porn star in history.

You are right b/c Spikes will not be associated with the team anymore. How many times have we heard Kraft say that, 'player X represents everything that the Patriots and our family stand for'. So using your logic, with Spikes part-timing as Peter North, Kraft is saying it's OK to be a porn star AND to play for the Pats.

Seems to me that people are seriously over reacting to Spi-kegate (see what I did there ;))

He did something that he regrets, and most likely happened before becoming a Patriots, and will hopefully not affect him.

The so called 'crime' is also very minor in my eyes! ChatRoulette is full of c**ks and clothed men trying to see t*ts!

Spikes is human, and made a bad decision!

People need to stop arguing about this! Isn't there a defensive backfield they can moan about somewhere? ;)

If Tom Brady started doing porn as a side business, Kraft would not cut him. Tom might not be used as much as a spokesman for the team, but he would not be cut.

Even if Spikes becomes an all pro linebacker he is unlikely to replace Brady as the face of the team, with or without a porn sideline.

The PGA took a hit not because of Tiger's misconduct but because of his absence and decline in play and because the sport became less popular.

Having a player on the team that did porn would not have that kind of impact, it would be limited to a very small number of hyper-moralists. If the NFL can survive having a dog killer, it can have a porn star.

And note, Kraft never said he would not sign Vick because of Vick's image or behavior, but because Tom Brady is a better QB than Vick.

We disagree. If TB did a porn ONCE, Kraft would ask him to stop. If TB says, 'no' and does 4 more porns, Kraft would not extend his deal. I am convinced of this.

All tied together.

Dog killing and later repenting is totally different than doing porns on a regular basis AND still wanting to play in the NFL.

I do have it on good authority that the Pats were VERY interested in signing Michael Vick, but again that has nothing to do with CONTINUING to do porns.

Under the language of the PCP, Goodell could easily interpret it as an "offense". Obviously he thinks there is some chance that it is given that they are "looking into it" and he's bringing Spikes in for the sit down. Senators and presidents have nothing to do with the PCP angle, only the morality angle and I'm not even addressing the issue on moral terms. Goodell's only problem in punishing Spikes would be that Spikes wasn't in the NFL at the time. If he were, though, it'd be a different story.

It really sounds to me like you're saying that Goodell has higher standards than what the electorate uses for politicians. That's hard to believe. The NFL has lower standards. If Goodell tries this puritan stuff, it will backfire precisely for that reason. People don't look up to athletes for morality more than they do for politicians, and people seem to be okay with some of the politicians who have engaged in much freakier acts than Spikes did in this vid.

That would make another team in the NFL very very happy to get a franchise QB and would piss of the vast majority of Patriot fans who don't care what Tom does in his free time, many of which who have been consumers of porn themselves.

Here is the difference: Approximately 70% of all males between age 18-34 watch porn at least once a month. Males age 18-34 is the NFL's target audience. So approximately 70% of NFL fans not only consider porn morally acceptable, they view it as fun. They also view it as unworthy of any reason for repentance.

On the other hand dog killing is not nearly as popular among males 18-34, and the vast majority of them consider the harming of dog to be wrong.

If Tom starts doing porn, the DVD - "The Patriot Missile" will surpass total sales of "Warner Brothers New England Patriots History of" DVD on the first day release.

This is actually a pretty good discussion and healthy debate.

The situation itself would piss off every Pats fan out there. The problem is that (opinion) MOST people would deduce that TB has a sexual addiction and with his defiant stance, is putting his need before the team. After all he has done for the region and the fans, I really don't think fans would revolt against Kraft . I just don't see it.

I agree with your demographics. However, the reason why porn is so popular is because people can enjoy it in the privacy of their own homes anonymously. Once you start attaching your name to porn publically and are also associated to a league that likes to think it's all mom and apply pie and morally pure, it gets dicey. No question society has become more casual about but it's still not 100% acceptable to every NFL fan.

I just don't see the correlation b/t/w dog killing and stopping to doing porns and not stopping.

But that is not what I am saying. I am only talking about the powers granted Goodell by the PCP, and pointing out that the primary purpose of penalties under the PCP are for league PR. Politicians have nothing to do with it. He obviously makes a PR cost/benefit analysis for all of these decisions. And if the PR benefits outweigh the PR costs, he could be interested in utilizing some of those powers for acts like this if they occur while a player is in the NFL. And I think that if Spikes were fined - I'm being hypothetical here - that there probably wouldn't be a very big backlash outside of New England.

If Kraft gave Tom and ultimatum regarding his personal life. And Tom choose to defy it. I am willing to bet opinion polls would come down very strongly in favor of Kraft (Please be quiet - edited) to keep Brady than Brady conforming to some overzealous moral standard they don't keep in their own life.

Most Patriot fans don't care who Brady scores with when he is not the field as long as he scores when he in the field.

He could proclaim that his plan was to sleep with a different women for every TD he scores this season and record on a DVD to be released at the end of the season and a significant portion of the female Patriots fan base would volunteer to help him in the endeavor. I know several who would jump at the chance. And most male fans would be hoping for a very long and variety DVD because the more women the more wins for the team.

I just think we disagree. I'm bringing up politicians because they have 100x the PR concerns that the NFL would. I thought that was obvious. NFL fans would forgive a guy for this 100x before constituents forgave a politician. As long as it's not illegal. What Eliot Spitzer did was illegal (even though I don't care about it) but some others have engaged in behavior that--while legal--was far far more taboo than Spitzer's and there wasn't the same backlash of bad PR.

I just hope he doesn't get tendinitis ior carpal tunnel n that hand.:bricks:

Not sure I follow. 99.999999% of the US population doesn't act, nor wishes to do porn for a variety of reasons.

Agreed. But I assume that you agree that hooking up is different than being involved in the porn industry.

With all the proceeds going to charity of course. ;)

I think NFL fans don't really care about the Spikes situation, and probably wouldn't really care if he were fined for it, either. They certainly wouldn't consume less NFL product. New England fans are a different story.

You sure about that....

1) Some don't do it because they feel it is wrong. They would not support this.

2) But others don't do it b/c they have family or friends in group one. Those folks who would do it, but for the negative reactions of others. They are not going to hold it against him. (This group is much, much larger than group 1)

3) Not built for. I fall in this group. I am kinda short, not athletically built, nobody would pay to see me naked. If someone was willing to pay me porn star money to be a porn star I would do it. But I am too fat and too ugly for that. Pretty much the same reason I am not an NFL QB. If some team was willing to pay be NFL money to play football I would do it. But alas, I don't have that skill set. Keep in mind the supply/demand for male porn stars is different than for females.

Plenty of people who aren't porn stars, would like to be porn stars. I would dare say anyone who has ever video taped themselves having sex, has some desire or fantasy about being a porn star. Not enough desire to become one. But deep down, part of them thinks it would be fun. Just like every kid who has ever played peewee football fantasizes about being in the NFL.

Spikes is stupid and "stupid" does as "stupid" does....I would give him a verbal warning then can him if he does something else this stupid.

Who knows but I tend to think my 99.99999% is mostly #1 and some of #2 and some of #3 but I digress.

I would argue that almost none of 70% who watch it monthly+ falls into #1, so that right there is 70% falling into either #2 or #3.

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/newRe: Brandon Spikes Video

I have seen more posts on this subject here on this thread than all other boards combined. This is not a big deal across the NFL. No one but some fans here are saying to cut him over this situation. He made a mistake he trusted that someone would not copy this on internet. Which btw I found out if this was on chat roulette then the person who did this broke the user agreement, thus opens up him/herself to a lawsuit if they ever found out who it was.

Seems like we are drifting off-topic but what the heck, I'm in Labor Day mode..

I'd argue that an additional demographic needs to be added to support your argument.

1- Those who are dead set against anything to do with porn based on personal beliefs.
2- Those who watch porn but don't want anyone to know because of privacy, public perception, etc.
3- Those who stay away from porn because of public perception.
4- Those that love everything about porn and would do it if not for physical reasons.

IMO- #2 is why it's a billion dollar industry. Closet porn-lovers if you will.

Exactly #2 is the biggest. And not one of them is going stop being a STH because a lineback on the team had sex in front of webcam.
