Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

This sucks. Now the Patriots can not sign anyone of much value in free agency. 14 million is more then Brady ever made in one year. I thought the Patriots were team first.Cassel is not worth 14 million.

Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

By doing this he will get 14.5 mill unless he redoes this "contract". If he is traded to another team he has the choice to redo this offer for any kind of contract over any number of years with that team or just keep the current offer. If he were traded to Det and did not want to play there he would just do one year 14.5 mil. Otherwise he more than likely will be traded and rip up the old offer and sign a new deal. He now legally can talk to other teams with the Pats permission since he is now under their control.

Fair enough, that's a good answer. But what he gains in security he loses in flexibility and autonomy. Unless, as others have speculated, a deal has already been worked out in principle.

Actually, it gives him more flexibility as it is only for 2009. If he is traded to another team, he pretty much has to agree to the trade by signing a long term contract. Otherwise the new team is trading to rent a player for one year who will then hit the open market as an UFA unless they chose to franchise him at a 20% raise over $14.5 million or $17.4 million for 2010.
As one of the posters noted, if he gets traded, he'll probably get a large signing bonus and a long term contract that will make him more money than the tender that he just signed.

More smart marketing. I believe this was expected by the Pats and will create even more chaos from teams that try to sign him. It may also mean another different thing I won't mention hear for fear of death by stoning.

So you think the Pats are putting Cassel in front of the team? Obviously they would not do that. All of this has been done in the interest of the team. Let's see how it plays out before deriding it.

Don't teams now need to give up TWO 1st round picks to get him now?

If that's increasing his flexibility I'm missing something.

I think that was only before he signed the tender. I believe he now is only trade-able, not sign-able.

Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

The Patriots have to move Brady or Cassel. How could they have almost 30 million on 2 players? Brady is due a 3 million dollar signing bonus Feb 27th and 5 million for the year.If they traded Brady they would save 8 million on the cap. They can not trade Brady because he wouldnt pass a physical. So there defensive help will come from the draft or not at all unless Cassel is traded.
I hope this doesnt back fire on them. The patriots need defense more then they need Cassel.

Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

This draft has a lot of talent in it. Why are some fans worried about signing free agents? The team can use some secondary help which seems to be there in this years first round and defensive help in general down the line. But next years team is pretty solid already especially on offense.

I like how this is playing out ... we will end up having at least 4 picks in the first three rounds for the next 3 years if we trade Cassel. Even if we don't trade him this year he's $$$ in the bank for future drafts and we already have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds this year. There is no emergency to move Cassel IMO.

Brady made $15 million last year.

That depends on Brady's health.

I trust the FO to do these things the right way.

Especially when you consider that any money we would use if, say, Cassel were traded, would be better spent locking in guys like Wilfork, AND paying all the freakin' high draft picks we have coming in this year.

They can trade him for lesser compensation. Trading him to the NFC for, say, a fifth round pick is better than getting a third round comp pick and having the Jest sign him.

Isnt this a new front office?

Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

i'll admit it i really didn't see that coming. to can someone get this straight for me please. now he has signed the tag. do teams have to give up 2 1sts for him for him to be traded? or can we still work out other deals? because if not then i think its going to be a little bit harder to get a trade now

I love quoting myself . . .

How about some of the the sooks in this thread trust that the adminstrative brains trust have a plan, have had one for a while and will be working to do what is best for the Patriots.

This is a strategic move by the Patriots, of which the outcome will be demonstrated in the coming months.

Exactly. There is simply no way this news came crashing out of the blue into the front office. Not a single thing has changed, other than the guarantee that at worst Cassel will be attending all off-season camps.

Incidentally, I haven't heard 'sook' since my NZ girlfriend dumped me.

Re: Report: Cassel has accepted the franchise tender (merged)

What is a sook, anyway ? :)
