It's a little hard to tell on the broadcast, but it seems like where he's lacking is in play recognition (which isn't surprising considering his lack of play with the regular defense at OSU). He's making a lot of plays 5-10yds farther down the field than it looks like he could be. Obviously play recognition is something that comes with experience, so hopefully he can develop that part quickly and make some type of impact this season.
Ridiculous analysis....I mean seriously....Ebner is a SAFETY...not a cb or nickleback......He covers who comes into his area, not a specific player.

He has shown to have terrific closing speed....Play recognition?......just look at his run support.....hardly someone who is making tackles,5 or 10 yards further upfield than he should be.....this is just knee-jerk.Some of our other higher-paid db's and safeties, would do well to emulate Ebner's textbook tackling.

Yup, and since he's a safety*, his 'area' is generally deep coverage on pass plays. It appeared to me on several running plays that he came into the play too late. That makes me think he's overplaying the pass because he's worried about getting beat deep. I couldn't see the whole field, so I'm not sure what actually happened, but he had to have gotten pretty deep to show up in the play that late. If he read run more quickly (or maybe had better instincts about what was coming) he would have made the play much sooner.

Sure just speculation, but there's good logic behind it. I don't know why such a speculation would be even remotely surprising, since he saw more live action on regular D in the last game than his whole career combined. He's going to have a steeper learning curve than anyone on this team probably anyone in the NFL). He's got all the tools, but he needs experience before he'll have a chance to be an effective NFL safety. Hopefully he can climb that learning curve quickly.

*caps lock and bold don't make your point any more impactful or clear.
