Exactly what just happened in the Kendrick Ellis deal for the NYJ. He plead guilty to a lesser charge, and it shouldn't factor into any missed playing time, unless it's a 2 game suspension or the like from Goodell.
As a Criminal Justice major, I can almost guarantee that Dennard will plea this one out to a lesser charge, and receive probation + (maybe) a short suspended sentence.
There are a TON of cases where someone has been charged with "assault on a police officer" during a bar fight, or when a cop goes to break it up.
Dennard will not be convicted of assualt on a police officer, I can 100% guarantee that.
Not only that, the fact that this is his first offense and he is a young kid will play into his favor dramatically. He will plead to a lesser charge, and his only real worry will be a game suspension from the NFL.
This is no big deal at all. The original charge is only the lowest felony degree charge anyway, so there's nowhere to go but out of the felony range altogether in a plea. Since about 80% of all cases are plead out to a lesser charge anyway to save time, money, and gain the actual guilty verdict, Dennard stands to benefit greatly from striking a plea deal.
