Mercury Morris is still a classless bowel movement
Did anyone hear him on Mike and Mike in the Morning just now? This was his first appearance on the show since the infamous, "don't call me when they're in my town" comment.
Now he says that IF the Patriots win the Super Bowl and go undefeated, he will "welcome them to his neighborhood as the SECOND best team in NFL history."
Sheesh. What a clod.

That's funny, because he was on the PFW online radio show (patriots.com) and seemed much more gracious (crazy-talkative, but gracious). He made a funny comment keeping up the "neighborhood" metaphor about the Pats coming to his house and him offering a plate of cookies that he'd kept inhis freezer for 35 years, but they were still good.
Guess it depends on whom he talks to. I'd be happy if I were him: two more weeks of interviews. Plus, if the Pats can win, he can horn in on what it was like to be the first undefeated champion. Otherwise, I think fans might lose interest in Miami's story, no matter what his ego tells him.

He's desperately trying to cling to his fading fame.

I don't know what people expect from him. Do you really think he's going to just start calling this Patriots team the best ever? If you do, you're high. Just as the Patriots won't automatically concede the 'best ever' title to a team that wins one more game in the near future if/when the league adds a 17th regular season game to the schedule.

Let's see, how about:
"If the Patriots go undefeated, I will congratulate them on their amazing accomplishment and welcome them to the undefeated club. I think it is probably even more difficult to go undefeated in this era then when we did it, due to the longer season, free agency and the salary cap. I know that something which hasn't been done in 35 years is an amazing accomplishment, just as it was when we did it. In any case, the Patriots deserve congratulations."
There is no need for him to continue to insist that it is a record which can never be broken, only tied (debatable), that they are a better team because they did it first, and that free agency helped the Patriots because they got Randy Moss and Wes Welker via it (not only false, but irrelevant - there is general agreement that it is much harder to build a dominant team in this era.)

The undefeated '72 Miami Dolphins are rightfully proud of their status and consider themselves the greatest team in NFL history, and they'll defend that belief. Unlike fans who have nothing better to do than complain about every perceived slight, these players have a legitimate stake in this. They actually played the games.
I may not agree with Morris, but I understand his position. Take off the homer glasses and the artificial chip on your shoulder and you'll understand his position too.
