Default ACTIONS BEFORE MARCH 4th - 12 PLAYERS

We have already made decisions on our ERFA's and Practice Squad players. (I forget, has Arrington signed yet? Contracts have been signed. The open question is who else will be signed by March 3rd when the season ends.
================================================== =====

1) FRANCHISE AND TRANSITION PLAYERS
a franchise tag for Mankins and a transition tag for Light is one option

2) RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
the team will tender Green-Ellis and Barrett (the only question is how high).

3) UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
The open question is how many of these will sign deals without going out into free agency and seeing their options.

While there was an option to tag both a franchise and transition player in 2010, I believe that was a one time exception for the uncapped year. Besides which they wouldn't transition Light at $9M+.

RFA's and ERFA's don't see a dime until they play and their tenders can be revoked at any time. Ditto franchise tagged players although the deadline on revoking those in the past has been July 15th unless of course the player signs the tender.

Few teams plan to extend their own FA between now and March 4th as they wait to see what kind of cap and landscape awaits in a new CBA and they probably aren't real keen on paying out signing bonus when guys may not be at the facility for several months or longer... Tannenbaum said today he is signing none of his FA prior to the new CBA. Brees and NO have apparently agreed that they will not attempt a new deal until a new CBA is forthcoming. Only team truly persuing a signing at this juncture is the Colts, although they are prepared to tag Manning if they can't come to an agreement that Polian feels he can live with and still field a competitive team.

If there is a lockout there will be no FA for players to test their market in, and even if there is a FA period following a new CBA the market will be fairly flooded with close to 50 UFA and teams will be coming to terms with a new salary cap that may be less than they spent in this uncapped season...

They might get an extension done with Light if he is willing to tie any signing bonus to the new league year or settle for more guaranteed money in lieu of bonus. They might extend a couple of others on your list with little or no signing bonus since most of them are minimum salary or veteran exemption candidates.

I don't know that the extra transition tag rule applies. In any case, it's nearly worthless, since all it gets you is right of first refusal, with NO compensation if the player signs elsewhere.

Faulk more likely he retires than leaves
Graham doesn't matter if Ghost is healthy
McGowan no opinion
Morris not sure if I'd want him back
Ojinnaka depth only, certainly replaceable
Page depends on how much they coughed up for him
Taylor I don't want him back, period
Warren if he's still got it in the tank, want
White there's no "Special Teamers 'R' Us," but can the Pats upgrade him? I don't know

Just to be clear to anyone who reads this: ALL tenders are revocable until they've been signed, at which point they become guaranteed against skill and injury.

Group 3 is Faulk, who I expect to retire and a gaggle of jags. More are a question of whether we want them back not whether they want to stay here.

Are you saying if you tender an RFA or ERFA the contract is guaranteed when they sign it? If they do not make the final cut, they still get paid?

Sorry. The "skill and injury" is ONLY franchise tags. My bad.

I've changed my opinion on Warren, and now think he'll go elsewhere for more security and money, because the Pats will have a major DL logjam if they draft somebody high.

The Pats' best strategy is to tell Mankins they're absolutely, positively franchising him, and offering to negotiate with him any time. Don't give him a chance to make an ultimatum about the franchise tag in the other direction. And shower him with phone calls from Kraft and BB saying "We're absolutely delegating this to Caserio and his team, but I want you to know that I really hope it works out. Also, thank you for playing your heart out for years."

FWIW, I thought that if neither BB nor the Krafts are doing the negotiations, it's more likely that would be Reese's job than Caserio's.

Just saying, the transition tag and franchise tag can't be used at the same time regardless of if the transition tag is useless or not.
