Belichick has also been of the philosophy that guards are the easiest offensive personnel to find, and should be paid the cheapest. Maybe versatility is more common to guards than specialty?
Irrespective of what Belichick and Scar ask the lineman to do, details no-one here is privy to, I am merely commenting in general on their situation. They are on the interior of the line, so their space responsibilities are reduced over those of tackles. They also do not need to make the line calls of the center.
