Does he even have to clear waivers? Isn't there some provision for veterans to be released outright (or am I hallucinating again)?

There is but that only applies to vested players released prior to the trade deadline passing. After the trade deadline has passed, in this case it has, all released players are subject to waiver claims.

But I'm wondering. Couldn't Jordan refuse to report to any team that puts a claim in for him?

I was wondering the same thing.... I remember hearing that could have happened with Simeon Rice when he was claimed by the Colts. But like the rest of the nation he has a love affair for Tony Dungy and decided not to refuse to report.

Thanks. He can refuse to report but I think the team that claimed him would retain his rights. So if a team wants him and has teh cap to pay him, he will not make it to NE.

Think of how pissed everyone would be if he Pats scooped him up.

Update: Well that didn't work out as I had planned. Next year baby, next year 19-0 we go. Next year.

That's probably correct.

Maybe the Pats should trade ther 7th rounder for Jordan. It's not like they need that pick anyway.

Sure he could, but his new team could go after part of his signing bonus (even though his old team paid it) since he's now in breach of his contract with them.

Default Re: If the Raiders release Lamont Jordan...

It used to be that a player had to clear waivers with teams picking in the order of the draft position. I don't know if the current or the actual previous year's draft order is used, but I think it is the previous year's draft order.

But things changed in one of the Player's Association agreements. I think if you are vested by time in the league, eventually you are exempt form waiver claims as a veteran and are a real true free agent. Can anyone confirm that?

And the second question is whether Lamont Jordan is such a qualified and vested veteran, if such a situation exists.

So, in order to protect himself, Jordan reports to new team and then does what he just did with the Raiders, ask for his release. At this point he tells every other team that he'll do the same with each team until he makes it to the Pats
