Lightbulb What We've Learned: Devin McCourty

Ian's Daily Blog - After sitting through minicamp and OTA's, we'll be taking a look at each of the new guys over the next couple of weeks to see exactly what we've learned about each of them heading into Training Camp next month. Today we'll look back at what we've heard from reports on 1st Round Draft Pick Devin McCourty.

I like him a lot. I think BB made a VERY wise choice here.

You already said that...on the blog, I think.
I thought I was getting Deja Vu.

Yeah, but not everyone goes there to read it. Figured I'd get a two-fer.

I'm really excited to see him on the field this year. If I had to guess what production we'll see out of McCourty, I'd have to guess that he'll probably be competing for nickelback (or have won it) by the end of the season.

I really think that he will be a starting outside CB before this season is over. He brings more of a physical presence to the position than Butler, who IMHO would be more suited to cover slot type receivers. This isn't to diminish Butler, who I believe is a special athlete, but more reflective of a slightly different set of skills, which makes one more suited to play outside an one more suited to play in the slot.

Either way I'm sure BOTH will get a lot of the defensive snaps with the regular D/

Not sure what you've been watching, Ken, but Butler is a pretty solid tackler in his own right.

I think he starts out (by end of camp i mean) as the nickel and challlenges Butler to start.
I wold be very disappointed if we keep trotting Wilhite out there on 3rd down and McCourty can' beat him out.

And you need to be if your are covering slot receivers and being in short zones. This isn't about what Butler brings to the table, K. This is about the skills McCourtey has. I think he is better suited to the outsides, just as I think Butler is the best man to play against slot receivers.

I might not start out that way, but barring injuries, its the way I think it will end up.
