If he can get seperation vertically and fight a CB for the ball, I don't see why not. But in my view, I think he's better suited for the slot role.

He's better suited to the outside than Welker. I think with time he could be a very effective outside receiver. He definitely has the skill set to play the slot as well, but we are going to need more than that from him this year. Height really doesn't mean much; Branch was 5'9" and played outside for us. Edelman certainly has the speed for it.

I think size dont matter, as long as you posses the proper mechanics, running crisp routes and just loose your guy and get open, you could play inside or outside. With Welker coming back, I have not doubt Edelman will be tested outside. He showed great progression on that Slot, sure will be fun to see him outside as well.

Great cone speed, but no breakaway speed. I do not see him creating distance. Also he has great juking talent that would be wasted if he were not used in the slot.

i do not thing so. even though most fan think it take 2 days to change from QB to WR i do not think its that easy.

playing in the slot he moves around and line up behind the line and does not face press coverage and also not by fast CB.
He is a qb and reads the defense and finds shallow empty areas in the zone .Outside he will be matched in press coverage with faster CB who can match him stride to stride and his productive will drop ,He is not quick enough and also does not have the WR instincts to play outside.

If you watch he does not even run wes welker option routes he runs screens and in zone routes which are simpler.

Edelman was working into the line-up as the outside receiver opposite Moss before Welker went down. He's being trained to play all the WR assignments, and while he doesn't have breakaway speed deep, he's going to get open by learning to run good routes, make his cuts at full speed, and avoid telegraphing his cuts to the DBs. Where he will best fit, or whether he can learn to be good wherever he is lined up is something we will be learning as the team reveals it too us in the games.

If he's 5'10" then Welker is 5' 7" or maybe 5' 8"

I remember Reiss pointing out that in the TEN game, the Patriots were using a 2-WR set with just Edelman and Welker. Even if that's just going to be a running formation, I presume that would have to have either Edelman or Welker going deep(ish).
