Building blocks - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

The following breakdown reflects the Patriots' building ways:

# Draft picks on the roster: 28
# Rookie/first-year free agents on the roster: 17
# Veteran free agents: 16
# Waivers/trades: 4
Total 65 players
Obviously the draft number will increase, so my question is what is the max pre-TC roster size limit? 80?

It is 80.

Please note that Woods and draft picks will not count against that roster limit until they signed the tenders/rookie deals respectively.

A fairer comparison might be who's on the 53. (Whether at the beginning, end, averaged equally over all games, or whatever.)

30% rookie/first-year free agents is, I think, substantially higher than the actual season figure.

ERFA Ventrone does count, though?

Absolutely...the average has been about 11 or 12%...thy will bring in a LOT of undrafted free agents and others in for tryouts...THAT will be the week or two after the draft...they will weed some out add others and then will start reducing their numbers so that as draftees sign, the number will be 80.

Makes good business sense: any team would want a close look at the cheapest "labor" for the PS and potential mid-season roster pick-ups.
