Why is this week important for contract extensions of NFL players?
Monday is the deadline for contracts to be submitted with the possibility of bonus and salary entirely applied to the 2008 Salary Cap. In other words, contracts can be structured – as we did in Green Bay and several teams now do – to allocate a disproportionate amount of Cap to the present to allow for maximum flexibility in the future. After Monday, teams can still extend contracts through the last Saturday of the regular season, but bonus will necessarily be prorated through the term of the contract, thus only a portion of the money will be allocated in 2008. With an average of over 7M of Cap room per team; look for some extensions to happen.

Re: Will we see any of our guys get extended this week?
According to Miguel we are $4 million under cap. I can not fathom the Patriots letting that get away. I would say the question is not will we? but who?
Re: Will we see any of our guys get extended this week?
Nah, it's one thing if you have way more cap space than you can reasonably rollover. If you get an extension done before the last week of the season you can still prorate a portion of the signing bonus back to this season thus lightening the load for the remainder of the deal. Plus you still have to come up with the actual cash outlay out of actual revenues and we've already shelled out quite a bit of that this season between Moss' $16M and another $8M+ in various roster bonuses. Wilfork or Brady would be the logical extention targets to prepay some salary and one is out while the other recently indicated there was no news to report on efforts to extend him. Some of the other potential extensions have questions remaining as far as long term value going forward (Gaffney, Watson, Sanders, Hobbs, Green) for a variety of reasons.
The $4M we have left at this juncture will be rolled over and used next season to mitigate any contract incentives or escalators achieved over the course of this season or to increase our adjusted cap for 2009. We won't lose it either way.
Re: Will we see any of our guys get extended this week?
My hunch is that nothing will get done. I would like to see any of the following extended: Wilfork, Wright, J. Sanders, O'Neal, L Sanders, Evans, Gaffney and Jordan.

Wright's going to be tough. If you're a young starting-caliber DL in a DL-starved league, you're not likely to stick around as the #5 man on a 3-man line.

I'd add Gostkowski to that list. Yeah, I might be the unofficial president of the Gostkowski fan club, but here's why I say that:
And tell me you can't see the Colts making a run at him even if he's an RFA in 2010.

If he's maintaining at that juncture either of the highest tenders would not be unreasonable and sufficient to keep ANY suitors away (the comps being first or first and third draft picks...). Remember they were not unwilling to pay Adam as the highest paid PK in the league...as long as it was on a year to year basis...

Yeah, but that's what I thought about Jarvis Green, and then he re-signed. So I think there's room for hope anyway.

That's true, but they could probably do it on a more cost-effective basis by extending him either this year or next. (I don't want to see Gostkowski kicking for anyone else, ever, and especially not the Colts or Donkeys.)
