This article from Lance Zierlein makes quite a compelling case for what looks like a perfect strong side DE for our D.. Interested in others thoughts..

He's the defensive lineman I want most. Would be a slight upgrade over Ninkovich but in the "NASCAR" package he is a HUGE upgrade over Cunningham.

Imagine a rush of Nink/Bennett/Wilfork/Jones

Oh got-damn...

Actually the Nascar would look like

Nink/Bennett/Armstead/Jones

I would not rule them out upgrading the DT postion either

They reportedly had interest in Michael Johnson, so interest in Bennett would make sense. He's not as long or athletic as Johnson, but the better overall player, as those numbers help show.

I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Glen Dorsey too. The DL position seems to be underrated in terms of potential FA signings due to our needs at WR and in the secondary, but I am expecting a signing or two of at least the middle tiered variety.

It's a position that needs some youth, depth, and improvement of talent; especially with Ninkovich, Love, Deaderick, Cunningham, and Pyror all free agents after this season, and Wilfork only having one after that. We're definitely going to see some positional improvement, along with a draft pick or two possibly even of the higher variety.

Silva has the value of Bennett at 5/36 for a team in free agency. That's approx. 7 million aav. I would think that is right on par with his worth.

Considering that Cliff Avril and Paul Kruger are both expected to get closer to $10M a year, that'd be a pretty great deal. The best player for the cheapest? Sign me up.

I love how playing next to Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley isn't enough for self-proclaimed "franchise pass rusher" Cliff Avril to best Rob Ninkovich in any quantifiable category (pressures, QB hits, etc.) What an overrated player.

Dorsey deserves a 1 year deal- if at all. Hes terrible.

With the exception of Nink, Jones and Wilfork, the talent on the d-line is very average...need more impact players for sure.

Entering the 2007 NFL Draft, some experts called Dorsey the best 3-tech DT to enter the draft in a decade. KC played him completely out of position made him concentrate on his weakness (run defense) instead of letting him penetrate inside which was his strength at LSU. I think he is the perfect guy to take a chance on to see if some of that magic is still there. If he can be even half the player people expected coming out of LSU then he would be a fantastic sub-rushing DT. Perfect low risk-high reward type player.
