During Bill Belichick’s final press conference for the New England Patriots, he talked about the fact he and owner Robert Kraft were parting ways, seeming measured and stoic as he spoke to reporters.

He didn’t answer any questions as he and Kraft delivered the news.
However, Belichick’s voice notably broke as he talked about the fans in the region and how much it all meant to him before he walked out of the door for the last time.

It was a surprise when Cleveland fired him. The Browns used five different quarterbacks, yet they still finished tenth in scoring in the NFL. 

The West Team defeated the East Team by a score of 26-11 The Offensive MVP was RB Frank Gore Jr. from Southern Mississippi, and the Defensive MVP was CB Jarius Monroe from Tulane. 

The Patriots finished off what could be their most significant addition to their coaching staff on Thursday, surprising everyone by hiring former NFL quarterback Alex Van Pelt as their offensive coordinator.

Coming off of the news the Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were parting ways several weeks ago, it felt like the only question was where and not when Belichick would be back leading a team in 2024.

The New England Patriots have been in need of some new energy in the coaching ranks on special teams, and the recent signing of Los Angeles Rams coordinator Jeremy Springer certainly provides that.

As we head up to the Reece’s Senior Bowl on Saturday (1:00 NFL Network), I will highlight those players that have stood out during the practices leading up to the game. 

The East-West Shrine game will be played Thursday night (8:00 NFL Network).  The practices are more important to the scouts than the game itself is.  The first practice was held Saturday, and the final practice will be Tuesday. 

While it remains to be seen whether or not Mac Jones’ future in New England will continue past this offseason, news about the reason behind one of the most pivotal plays of Jones’ terrible 2023 season came to light on Monday.

While plenty of questions still remain on the offensive side of the football, the Patriots made a smart move over the weekend by promoting DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator.

“We can talk about scheme… but if you don’t have players that have a shared vision that are on the same page, then it’s going to be hard”

Why have the Patriots not named an Offensive Coordinator?  Some speculate the offensive Coordinator position in New England is not an attractive position to the leading candidates. 

Following his departure from the New England Patriots, there seemed to be little doubt that given the amount of openings that were continuing to become available around the league, Bill Belichick would be on someone’s sideline in 2024.  The only question would just be where he’d end up.

We are in Phase One of the Mayo era, and he is conducting interviews with quite a few coaches for the Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams coordinator positions.

One bit of information that was interesting following New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo’s appearance on WEEI on Monday was the fact that despite the talk of being open to input from his players, one key fact still remained. Flexibility within the scheme may be something he’s open to.  But at the same time, the overall plan needs to be executed.

On Monday, New England Patriots Jerod Mayo provided a little glimpse into how the team currently views Mac Jones following some comments he made on WEEI, and it sounds like the future for the former number one pick remains in question heading into 2024.

I don’t care what your title is. It’s what’s your job, what value do you bring to the organization. I think that’s the most important thing.

The page was turned on Wednesday, with Jerod Mayo joining Patriots owner Robert Kraft in front of reporters in front of a packed house at Gillette Stadium.

Patriots offensive lineman Sidy Sow was not as bad as he appeared to be.  In fact, he was way ahead of any rookie guard in the league and in some evaluations was in the top grade amongst all guards in the league.

“Defense, defense, defense. We all know who designed the defense for those great teams. That’s what he did. That’s how he made his mark.

Is it going to be business as usual or will the Patriots go outside of the organization and bring in some new thinking.  The “Patriot Way” of evaluating pro and college prospects is not working.  

Jerod Mayo is now the new head coach of the Patriots. Moving faster than you can say “Rooney Rule”, the Patriots quickly replaced Bill Belichick with their former linebacker and current linebacker coach.

With Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft agreeing to part ways on Thursday, Kraft later said that the plan would be to move quickly as the club begins assembling its new staff ahead of the offseason.
