As the New England Patriots gear up for training camp, head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that Christian Gonzalez is present and expected to be a full participant when practices get underway. However, the promising young cornerback’s contract remains a topic of discussion, with negotiations between the club and his representatives still ongoing.

On Friday, Vrabel met with the media ahead of the start of Saturday’s first public practice, expressing his excitement about having Gonzalez back and the impact he can make on the team.

For Gonzalez, it’s been a long process.  The team exercised his 5th year option at the end of April, which ensures that he’s under contract through next season.  But the expectation is that a new deal will potentially be in his future.  The fourth-year cornerback reportedly purchased a home in the area over the offseason, signaling that things were going in a positive direction in terms of his long-term future.

Gonzalez Expected to Participate Fully

Vrabel revealed on Friday that Gonzalez is not only present at Gillette Stadium for the start of training camp but is also expected to be a full participant in team activities.

“I would expect him to be here. He is here, and I would expect him to participate,” said Vrabel.  “Really enjoy the person, enjoy the player. And that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The big question is simply going to be whether or not, should talks potentially take a turn, whether or not that could impact Gonzalez’s participation.

How the Patriots view things is difficult to say. Vrabel only had him for one season, with Gonzalez participating in 14 games in 2025 during the regular season while making some critical plays throughout New England’s incredible playoff run.

But overall, Gonzalez has yet to play a full season during his NFL career.  He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery and ended his rookie campaign just four games into the 2023 season.  The defensive back then played in 16 games in 2024, but missed the finale with a concussion.

He missed the first three games in 2025 with a hamstring injury, before finally seeing his first action against the Panthers in Week 4.  But he was a key part of a defense that got better as the season went on, and his contributions during the postseason certainly can’t be overlooked.

Contract Talks Continue with Agents

With Gonzalez reportedly set to participate, Vrabel acknowledged on Friday that discussions are ongoing and he sounded relatively upbeat, indicating that both sides are working towards a resolution for the young cornerback’s future.

“Those contract negotiations are ongoing between the club and his agents,” said Vrabel.  “And I’m excited about having Christian back here with us and the impact that he can make on our football team.”

One question has been whether what transpires with Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon as he looks for his own new deal might influence the negotiations. But Vrabel dismissed that, feeling that right now it’s about working out a deal to keep his own player in the fold.

“No, I don’t think those things … I mean, again, I don’t think they have anything to do with one another,” said Vrabel. “We’re not negotiating with the Seahawks. We’re negotiating with Christian’s representatives. And I don’t think that there’s anything different than just our communication with them.”

For now, Vrabel added that the focus is just on starting the process towards “preparing to win” in 2026.  With the players set to hit the field, he’s looking forward to getting started.

“Everybody’s undefeated,” said Vrabel.  “That’s what I tell our fans when they ask, ‘How’s the team look?’ It looks undefeated, just like every other team in the National Football League.”

“And now we all get an opportunity to build our teams, to strengthen our rosters, to improve our players, to develop the players that need to be developed, and then continue to try to prepare to win.”
