Patriots' Vrabel Addresses Gabe Jacas Holdout: "We’re not going to put a timeline on it"

With New England Patriots training camp set to get underway, head coach Mike Vrabel was asked on Friday about the ongoing situation with 2026 second-round pick Gabe Jacas, whose contract dispute continues to keep him away from the facility as the rest of the team returned to the stadium.

Jacas wasn’t in Foxboro on Friday, which wasn’t exactly what fans were likely hoping to see. His status remains uncertain as the two sides have yet to reach an agreement, and it looks like he won’t be among the players who will be out on the field on Saturday.

On Friday, Vrabel did shed a little bit of light on the situation. He confirmed Jacas underwent surgery to ‘take care of some things,’ although he chose his words carefully as he discussed the rookie. A previous report by ESPN’s Mike Reiss indicated that the rookie underwent a “clean-up” procedure, which seems to be what this current stalemate has centered around.

“Well, continuing to work through the contract,” said Vrabel. “I think that those have been positive, obviously, between the club and his representative. And, hopefully, we’ll get him in here sooner rather than later.”

When asked how long he thought it might be before an agreement was reached, Vrabel said he wasn’t willing to put a timeframe on things.

“We’re not going to put a timeline on it or a timeframe,” said Vrabel. “But, spoken to Gabe personally. And again, excited to get him in when he’s under contract.”

It’s unknown how much of the injury has played into the delay in negotiations. Whatever Jacas’ issue is, that seems to be one of the things adding a layer of complexity to the rookie’s delayed start.

Vrabel wouldn’t get into whatever it was, but said that his staff has been in contact with the rookie and they’re aware of his situation.

“We’re not going to get into the injuries,” said Vrabel. “I mentioned that Gabe had a surgery to take care of some things. And that’s, that’s where we’re at. And again, like Mike said, we’re going to evaluate him when he gets here. And, I know that Jim and Frank have been in contact with him throughout the summer.”

Vrabel ‘Cautiously Optimistic’ On Resolution

Jacas is certainly in an interesting spot when it comes to his peers. He’s currently the only unsigned second-round pick in the NFL, along with being the only Patriots rookie also not signed at this point of the offseason.

Still, Vrabel maintained a positive outlook on negotiations, and while he wasn’t willing to put a timeframe on things, it sounded like the two sides were getting closer to a resolution. The only question then might be the condition Jacas is in when he does finally begin practicing.

“I mean, I can only go by what he says,” said Vrabel when asked if he had a sense of where the rookie was physically. “And so when he gets here, we’ll evaluate that. Of course, be as smart as we can and as possible just to see because we haven’t seen him with us.”

“But I would say that I’ll use the word cautiously optimistic. But again, those conversations have been great and excited to see where he’s at.”

With Harold Landry set to begin camp on PUP and his health still in question, the Patriots’ selection of Jacas seemed to be their attempt at building depth at an area that remains somewhat thin.

While many didn’t see Jacas as an immediate impact player in 2026, it doesn’t change the fact that the defense saw a significant rotation at various positions throughout much of last year. That played a big factor in the team’s success, and it absolutely helped accelerate a lot of the development we saw from several players, especially down the stretch.

But the longer Jacas misses time, the more it will delay that process and potentially slow down whatever opportunities he might receive in the coming season.

For now, it looks like the rookie won’t be out there on Saturday with his teammates. Depending on how things continue to play out, it remains to be seen how much longer it might be before we finally see him out there.

The Patriots are actually pretty good shape health wise given they played an extra month of the season (playoffs). The Bills have an injury list the size of the pats or bigger and they got knocked out 3 weeks earlier. All the teams have guys miss OTA’s or part of summer camp due to injury or contract issues. For the Pats, it seems to me there’s just not a lot to talk on, so there’s a microscope in NE on a few players. Jacas story is certainly interesting.
