Here’s what Patriots linebacker Jack Gibbens had to say during his press conference on July 28, 2025.

On how the first day of pads was:

“Felt good. Obviously, got a lot to clean up. Got to watch the film. Stuff kind of happens fast. First day, everybody’s amped up, so got to see how it went on film and make the corrections and go from there.”

On the fact he had a good practice two days ago and what that does for him, and if it creates momentum:

“Just trying to take advantage of every rep I get, earn a role on this team, whatever that may be. Just feel like whatever plays you get out there, you make good plays while you’re out there, you get more plays. So just trying to continue to build my role and help this team win.”

On the fact he’s been in the league for a while and how does he continue to challenge himself:

“I think a lot of it is not getting comfortable with knowing the install, but just starting to get really into the details of why we do what we do, how teams might try to attack certain coverages and stuff that we’re in. And then we got a great linebacker room right now, Super-veteran, guys that have played a lot of football, and they’ve been in a lot of different systems. So seeing different things, different ways and kind of understanding schematics from a whole of how everyone else plays certain things. And really just building a full defensive knowledge has been great this year for sure.”

On if he enjoys a comfort level with Robert Spillane being out there as the communicator for the defense:

“Yeah, for sure. Like I just said, everybody in our room has played. We got almost everybody in our room has started games in the NFL. So it’s great having a lot of veteran guys that know what they’re doing. This is the smartest room I’ve ever been a part of. Definitely everybody’s locked in, hungry for more, hungry for more. And so it’s really comfortable out there. No matter who you’re playing with, you know that that guy knows what he’s doing, and we can help each other out.”

On the fact that while he’s been out there since last week, with today being the first day in pads, whether it’s really the first day of practice:

“Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, everything that we did up to this point, those are valuable reps. We had to bank on that we won’t get back. But definitely the game changes when you put pads on. Everything from the run fits, the pass rush, how you cover people, everything’s different. This game is played with pads on. So these days definitely mean more for sure.”

On when he talks about the linebacker room and its smarts, what makes him say that:

“Just the way that our meetings, everybody’s got questions. We’re not going over just the basics of the playbook, X’s and O’s, like ‘This is your job.’ It’s, ‘Oh, if I get this player, they have this type of player here, what adjustments can we get to?’ It’s just next-level stuff that you only get with veteran guys that have been around. We’re not so worried about, ‘This is where I need to line up, and this is my key, and this is my job.’ We’re taking it next level. And we’ve been doing that since back in OTA, so that’s where that comes from.”

On what’s one point of emphasis in Terrell Williams’s system that he hammers day in and day out:

“Effort and technique, that’s really what we’re all about on this whole team, but on defense, especially, is running to the ball, playing with great technique, and being physical. That’s kind of like the three main things that we’re trying to focus on.”

On the fact he’s been talking to them throughout the spring and early summer, but what it’s been like to have him with them on the field:

” Yeah, I mean it’s great.  He’s super infectious. He’s got great energy, big personality. Loved my time with him in Tennessee, and just getting him back here has been amazing. He definitely sets the tone for us, and he’s a great energy to have out there. So it’s awesome to have him back.”

On what excites him about this defense as he looks around and sees the guys they have:

“I think it’s a really connected group already, especially for the short amount of time that we’ve been together. Guys just want to play hard for each other, want each other to do well. I think we got a lot of talent, a lot of guys who really play with a chip on their shoulder, play hard, play physical. I’m really excited about the group that we got for sure.”

On if he circles a day like this on the calendar because it feels like football:

“Definitely, yeah. This is different than what we’ve been doing in shorts. You just can’t replicate people putting hands on each other. Everything changes how the gaps look, the speed of the game. Everything’s different once we get pads on. So it’s definitely a big change.”

On if there’s an adjusmtent period when they put on the pads, or if it’s just like getting on a bike:

“I mean, it feels familiar in a lot of ways, but also, like I said, the game is going to happen a lot faster. So your eyes got to speed up, your decision has got to speed up. I feel like, I tell a lot of young guys on a day like today, everybody’s amped up and wants to play really hard, wants to knock somebody out. Just go back to your technique, slow yourself down. Good footwork, good hands, good eyes. That’ll get you through until your body speeds up to the speed of the game once it goes live, for sure.”

On how much pace and tempo is emphasized by the staff:

“Yeah, I mean, we want to play to a certain standard with our effort and our finish, and you have to do that at practice if you want to do it on Sunday. So we’re going to fly around, we’re going to run everywhere, and we’re going to finish to the ball every time and compete in the way that we finish on every play, not just running to run a couple of stripes, but I’m trying to go get the guy with the ball, and the offensive guy is trying to cut me off and protect the guy that’s carrying the ball.  So it’s competitive for sure.”

On the fact he’s had a lot to watch, but how much does he get to see of Vrabel becuase he’s a linebacker, and how much time he actually spends with them:

“Yeah, one thing I’ll say about him is he’s going to coach everything. He coaches no matter what position you are. We’re going to go in there in a squad meeting, and he’s going to be coaching all 11 guys or 22 guys on the field. So that’s something that’s really cool. You get to learn a whole wealth of knowledge from a host football standpoint of what everyone’s doing, how they’re being coached. But then he’ll pop down in our meeting rooms from time to time for sure if he’s got some things he saw that he wants to adjust. So it’s great having a guy that played for sure, coaching you.”
