One round after taking explosive running back TreVeyon Henderson in round two on Friday night, the Patriots dipped their foot back in the pool on the offensive side of the football with their second selection of the evening to begin Round 3.

With the 69th overall pick in the third round, the New England Patriots selected Washington State wide receiver Kyle Williams.

Williams is an impressive player.  The 6’0″ 186 pound receiver finished last season with 70 receptions for 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Cougars, while averaging 17.1 yards per reception.

The biggest thing most scouts seem to like about him is that he’s a terrific route runner, showing some incredible quickness and change of direction.

He’s also a downfield threat, and when he gets the ball in space, he’s typically someone who picks up a significant amount of yards after the catch.

One thing that was worth noting was his play in the quick game, which watching his film saw the wideout used in a similar role we see from New England’s offense.  He’s got terrific feet and he’s extremely elusive, and his acceleration is absolutely something that stands out because he kicks things into another gear pretty quickly, and then he’s generally off to the races.

The way he splits defenders is impressive.  He’s just so nifty in space and he’s got a pretty good penchant for, even when it looks like a defender might close on him, getting away from the crowd and back into the open field.

As one of the top remaining wideouts on the board, it was certainly a pleasant surprise when his name was called.  At the same time, for a receiving room that already has Stefon Diggs, Demario Douglas, and Mack Hollins, Williams’ addition likely means that everyone else down the depth chart will potentially be under some intense competition in the coming months.

That should definitely make things interesting for a team that desperately needs to become more dynamic on that side of the football.
