Patriots Set to Add Another Candidate to Their Offensive Staff?

With Josh McDaniels settling back in as the team’s offensive coordinator, it sounds like there might be another outside offensive mind joining him heading into this season.
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the club is reportedly in talks to potentially add Bears interim coach Thomas Brown to their offensive staff.
Brown was among the candidates who interviewed for the Patriots offensive coordinator spot prior to McDaniels return. He’s coming off of what was likely a tough year, having been part of a Bears staff that dealt with some significant changes.
Brown began last season as the Bears pass game coordinator, but he ended up being thrust into bigger roles as the season progressed.
Oddly enough, during this past 2024 Patriots Season, it was New England who seemed to start the dominoes falling in Chicago. The Patriots’ 19-3 win over the Bears in Week 10 saw the first one fall, with Chicago offensive coordinator Shane Waldron fired after that game, with Brown elevated into Waldron’s role.
But Brown found himself promoted yet again several weeks later, stepping into the role as interim coach when former head coach Matt Eberflus was dismissed at the end of the month. His firing came following a disappointing loss in Detroit that included some puzzling clock management at the end of the game, which dropped the Bears to 4-8 on the season.
Bringing in Brown to work with McDaniels feels like a wise move. Brown is a smart offensive mind who did a solid job with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams last season, with Williams seeing improvement after Brown ascended up the coaching ranks.
While it’s unknown what his role might be, he’s still someone the club will benefit heavily from when it comes to putting smart people around Drake Maye. It also provides them with another terrific mind to join McDaniels, hopefully improving an offense that finished at the bottom of the league in scoring in 2024.
