Patriots Waste No Time, Fire Mayo Following Win Over Bills

Jerod Mayo said following Sunday’s win over the Bills that he would be speaking to the Krafts tomorrow in what he said would be his normal meeting before seeing “where it goes from there.”

It appears, we know what the future will hold a little sooner than we thought.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots are wasting no time and are parting with Mayo, which came barely a couple of hours following the club’s 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.  The loss cost the club the opportunity for the #1 overall pick, dropping them down to 4th overall heading into April’s draft.

Whether or not the outcome of Sunday’s game had anything to do with him being let go is probably unlikely.  Schefter reported prior to the game that he believed that Mayo might have been “Out” while discussing the first-year head coach’s future, so it appears that the decision may have been made before Sunday’s contest even took place.

Mayo said after that game that he addressed the team and called it an “emotional” environment for a team that finishes the season 4-13.

That matches last season’s win total against a Bills team that sat starter Josh Allen and didn’t play the majority of its starters.

“Just there in the locker room, pretty emotional,” said Mayo.  “But at the same time, these guys have been turning the page, ignoring the noise, and just coming to work every day, and I’m very appreciative of that.”

Unfortunately, it appears he’s part of the page that’s being turned.

What the future holds for the remainder of the staff remains to be seen, but the rumors surrounding Mike Vrabel coming in to succeed Mayo will now likely be the focus.  Should the former Patriots linebacker be hired, Vrabel will likely have his own staff he’d like to assemble, which will potentially mean the coaching carousel inside the building is probably far from over.

For now, we’re on to 2025. And there are clearly big changes ahead, with the first domino obviously falling tonight as the club looks to start the journey of getting back into contention after two extremely disappointing seasons.

Pathetic, the Patriots are the laughing stock of the NFL! Can’t even figure out a loss was beneficial to the future! The Krafts should be embarrassed.
