Watching that game last night, I knew early on it was going to be a long night.  The Patriots are not built to come from behind.  They need to jump out to the lead or be close and maintain the time of possession.  Last night, the offense couldn’t do anything correctly and the Defense couldn’t tackle.

We knew the Offensive Line, starting two rookies, one of which has never played Left Tackle, was going to have its problems.  It was the bad tackling of the Defense that upset me.  They missed 13 tackles for an additional 100 yards after 1st contact.

Here are my observations from the 24-3 loss.

  • Aaron Rodgers was spectacular. He was getting his passes off so quickly that even when the Patriots defenders beat the Jets O-line, Rodgers would get rid of the ball so quickly, they couldn’t get to him in time.
  • Rodgers was supposed to be a statue, sitting in the pocket, as he came back from his Achilles injury. His mobility was incredible.  The Patriots defense didn’t help making things worse by taking the wrong angles and losing containment.  Rodgers was 6-6 when he rolled out or scrambled out of pressure.
  • That was vintage Rodgers. He completed 27 of 35, 281 yards and 2 TDs.
  • Tavai only made 1 of 4 plays in the 1st Then had one of the two bonehead plays the Patriots Defense would make.  He made a good play in the backfield and tackled Breece Hall for a loss.  He then picked him up and Suplexed him, slamming him to the ground right in front of the Ref.  Stupid, Stupid, Stupid and this from the guy wearing the Green Dot as the Defensive playcaller.
  • Can Kyle Dugger play any worse than he did in this game? He is horrible in pass coverage, and he couldn’t stand up to the run as a LB.  He is not living up to the contract he signed in the offseason.
  • Mike Onwenu does not have the foot speed to play Tackle. His size is not well suited to the zone blocking scheme AVP wants to run.  He is not a good fit.  Let’s move him back to Guard and put Wallace back at Right Tackle, Robinson to Left Guard.
  • Patriots finished the game with Zach Thomas at LG and Demontrey Jacobs at Left Tackle. At one point we had two rookies (Wallace and Robinson) and a third-year player (Thomas) with a total of 3 games and 36 total plays.  Jacobs came in for Wallace after back-to-back holding calls.  I didn’t think the 1st was a holding call but a great one-armed block where he knocked the defender to the ground.
  • The Patriots were badly outcoached. The Jets knew exactly what the Patriots were going to do before they did it.  This was the 1st short week this coaching staff had to deal with, and they failed miserably.
  • Rhamondre Stevenson had his 3rd fumble in three games. This one he lost and led to a Jets Field Goal.  I think they need to make him hold onto a ball everywhere he goes and let the players try to knock it out.  The Pat’s did this with Kevin Faulk when he was a young player.  After that he was much better at holding onto the ball.
  • Brissett missed a wide open Austin Hooper on a crossing pattern. It would have been a big gain and Brissett just missed him.
  • The Jets put the most pressure on the QB through three weeks. In the 1st two games the Jets only blitzed 14% of the time.  Against the Pats, they blitzed from the opening play and didn’t stop until the final bell.  Next Gen Stats had the Jets blitzing on 40% of the plays.  It was sharks in a feeding frenzy.  They smelled blood in the water and attacked.  If I were the Pats, I wouldn’t forget the Jets were still blitzing when the game was already over, and Drake Maye was put in the game.  The first play of the game, the Jets blitzed on a play action pass.  Did the Patriots give out a tell like in poker?  I liked the idea of passing on 1st down, but Brissett couldn’t execute.
  • I liked getting Drake Maye’s feet wet in a game that was out of hand. He was only 2-4 for 22 yards, but he can run and has a strong arm.
  • DON’T TAKE THE BAIT – Keep Maye on the bench. This Offensive line (the 3rd different lineup in three weeks) is simply bad.  Don’t put Maye out there until the line is ready.
  • The Jets were the first team in the NFL to accumulate these 5 stats in a win. They had 400 yards in total offense, 40 minutes in Time of Possession, 7 sacks, no turnovers and didn’t give up a Touchdown.  Total domination!
  • The Jets ran for 133 yards and 4.0 yards per carry.
  • Demario Douglas was finally taken off the milk carton and had 7 catches on 9 targets. He had one bad miss where he pulled up on a crossing throw, that if he continued would have gotten him killed.
  • The Patriots had 5 penalties for 80 yards. The two Personal Fouls were killers.  Those are dead ball penalties and 15 yards each.  The first one led to the opening TD.  The second came after a 22-yard completion to Conklin, adding 15 yards and flipping the field.
  • The Jets continued their undisciplined ways. They had 8 penalties for 106 yards.  This is the only reason the score wasn’t 40-3.
  • Patriots 139 yards of total offense is pathetic
  • Patriots QBs were sacked 7 times (Brissett 5, Maye 2) for – 59 yards
  • Brisset was very bad. He didn’t pick up any pre-snap blitzes and audible out of the paly called
  • The Patriots rushed only 15 times for 72 yards for a 5.2 YPC. Many of those runs were once the game was already over and the horse was out of the barn.  Gibson had 5 carries for 29 yards
  • Christian Gonzalez had tight coverage on Garrett Wilson, but on the TD, the throw was just outside of his grasp, and it was a great catch inside the pylon.

The Patriots added Jamree Kromah a DE from James Madison to their 53-man roster.  Kromah was signed off the Bears Practice Squad and therefore must be kept on the 53-Man Roster for three weeks.  He is 6’4″ 275 lbs and ran a 4.77 40-yard dash.  At James Madison, he had 10 sacks his Senior season, most coming from a Defensive Tackle position.  The question is if he can stand up physically as an undersized DT or bigger, slower Edge player.

Chuks Okorafor officially was moved to the left Team/Reserve List.  This means he is gone and can’t come back this year.  The CBA allowed a 5-day exempt period in which he could come back.

The 40% blitz rate was likely not due to any ‘tell’, but more of a general run or pass blitz. Stop the run with #s and if it’s a pass, kill the QB. Fully assumptive on my part. Cincy went to 8 in the box for a bit and had success and the tape/roadmap was there for SEA and NYJ. Your right regards Onwenu. We were told by BB’s regime and multi OC’s the guy is a guard. A good one. He’s at tackle only due to dire need. The NBC Boston media took one sentence from Wolf that “Onwenu… Read more »
