It appears that Bailey Zappe’s time with the New England Patriots is officially over.
After spending the last two seasons on the practice squad, along with seeing some time on the field here in New England during these last two seasons, Zappe’s moving on to a different team in 2024.
One day removed from being waived for the second time by the Patriots following two consecutive training camps, Zappe is taking his talents to Kansas City.
According to Jordan Shultz of Bleacher Report, Zappe is joining the Chiefs on their practice squad after reportedly being claimed by the club.
Zappe’s no stranger to the midwest, having played his college football at Western Kentucky while also growing up in Texas. This also gives him the opportunity to learn from someone like Andy Reid while also playing behind Patrick Mahomes.
The former 2022 4th round pick finished his final preseason in New England completing 15-of-25 for 137 yards, with his 60% completion percentage being second on the team behind rookie Drake Maye (61.8%).
Meanwhile, rookie Joe Milton finished 11-of-30 (36.7%) passing, while fellow veteran Jacoby Brissett finished 5-of-14 (35.7%).
Head coach Jerod Mayo said on Wednesday that Zappe’s been the “ultimate professional,” but that the group they have is simply better.
“One thing I’ll say about Zappe, and look, he has been the ultimate professional,” said Mayo. “Even before I took this role, we’ve had a good relationship, and I’m always going to root for a guy like Zappe.”
“[He] always had a great attitude, even though things weren’t probably ideal for him personally. In saying that, we think that these three quarterbacks have a chance to be better than what Zappe displayed.”

It was pathetic that fans booed Zappe at a home preseason game. What, demonize the guy as he was part of the 4 win season? Cheer him a year prior as a rookie phenom and Zappe fever? Both off base to me. Reality is this was a young guy that played at Houston Baptist (?) and then one big year at Kentucky. He ended up in NFL games his rookie year when he was not ready for the NFL, and only cuz Hoyer and Mac Jones both went down on consecutive weeks. This while a new offense was being put… Read more »
