Guardian Cap Helped Patriots Brissett Avoid an Injury

While the new Guardian Caps we’ve seen players this preseason are there to help lessen the possibility of players suffering head injuries, it sounds like they served a different purpose on Sunday.

During Sunday’s practice, quarterback Jacoby Brissett appeared to strike his hand on another player’s helmet during his follow-through, which has often been devastating.  We’ve seen quite a few quarterbacks suffer significant hand injuries after striking a helmet on a throw, which has ended up leading to lingering problems for that player all season.

However, Jerod Mayo said during his press conference that the new padding players are wearing on their helmets might have helped Brissett avoid a potential injury.

“Yeah, he’s okay. He’s okay,” said Mayo when asked about it Monday.  “And one thing I would say, even though they look crazy, the Guardian Caps kind of help out with that. Instead of hitting a hard helmet with your thumb, the Guardian Caps have a little more give.”

That’s pretty fortunate, especially given the significance that injury tends to have.

For now, thanks to that equipment, the Patriots appear to have avoided any hits to their quarterback depth chart.  Although the battle to find out who will ultimately end up under center appears to be heating up heading into these final couple of weeks.
