Here’s what New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett had to say when he spoke to reporters on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

On how he balances fighting for a starting role and being a mentor to Drake:

“I mean, I don’t think it’s just me and Drake. It’s [Bailey Zappe] Zapp, and it’s Joe [Milton]. All of us are competing against each other. But if you ask anybody that I’ve ever played with, I’m that with everybody. I’m a teammate. The competition shouldn’t take who I am as a man away from anything that I do on the field. I want to see us all succeed. Obviously, the best player is going to play. If that’s me, I hope it is. If not, I got to do my job to help others and find a way to serve this team.”

On how he’s taken it upon himself to be a mentor in the locker room:

“Well, I’m the second oldest or the first, one of the oldest, so it’s kind of easy. They always come up and ask questions. But it just comes with being in the locker room. I’m going to the young guys for certain things. They’re coming to me. I’m going to the defense and things like that. That’s just the workings of building the team.”

On his early impressions of Javon Baker:

“Oh, man, he made a couple of plays today. He’s getting better. Obviously, somebody that we are looking forward to seeing what he can become. He’s been doing a good job of getting better each and every day, and taking a coaching from the meeting room into the field and trying not to make the same mistakes twice. Right now, that’s all you can ask from him.”

On the plays they made against the defense, if they’ve built trust:

“I think that’s how you build it. He was single-covered. The guy just ran over top. No, I’m messing with you. But I think that’s how you build the trust right there. It’s just going out there and trying things and seeing what guys can do and seeing what plays guys can make and things like that. It was good to see him go up and do that.”

On what stands out to him about Baker’s skillset:

“Right now, it’s us trying to figure out all his skillset that he has. Obviously, good route runner, good hands, can go up and make plays like he did today. We’re looking forward just to see more he can do.”

On the fact he had some good throws during 7-on-7s, 11-on-11s, and how he’s feeling:

“I feel like I’m getting better. Obviously, getting comfortable with the guys. Obviously, I’m comfortable with this offense. I’ve been in it before. But obviously, getting refamiliar with it and with the guys. And obviously, our defense does a good job of giving us so many different looks. So every day, it’s a game day. I’m excited every time I come out on this field to go out there and get better, make mistakes and correct them, and try to put my best foot forward.”

On if he feels he was performing well or if that’s just his standard:

“Man, I hope it’s that, and it gets better.”

On what he’s seen from Drake Maye and how Maye has handled any adversity he’s witnessed from him:

“Yeah, from day one, it was calling plays. They didn’t call this many plays in college and going out there in that process. That’s what I was telling him, every time you step out on this field, you got to make sure to get better at something. And I think he’s accepted that. And obviously, he wants to go out there and be perfect, which we know that’s not possible for any of us right now. But he’s going out there and making corrections from his mistakes the day before and constantly adding more things to who he’s going to become as a player. So I’m excited for him. I see the work that he’s putting in. He’s doing a good job.”

On what he likes about this offense and what he feels is good about it for a quarterback:

“It’s multiple.  It allows you to bring out the best player in you. They obviously tailored the offense around the quarterback and the things that we can do, and obviously, the players that we have. So as a quarterback, you want to make sure that you have a wide variety of things that you can do and  I think we got the players to help us with that.”

On the play where he went over to Drake after he made a play and what happened that made him do that:

“Like we just said, it’s correcting the things from the day before and going out there and doing it right the next time because you never know when it’s going to come up. And it’s just positive reinforcement, man, and trying to instill that confidence in him and show him that he is getting better.”

On how valuable that is to move around the league and rejoin this offensive system:

“Yeah, I mean, it’s been good. Not only is it good for me as far as me playing and going out there and playing fast, but it’s also the ability to help those guys in other rooms and tell them what I know that we’re looking for in this offense and what I’m looking for at the quarterback position on certain plays and things like that. I think it just helps me play fast and it helps me help other people.”

On his thoughts as a veteran player on the possibility of the league reshaping the offseason program:

“Not yet. You’re the first person to tell me that.”

Really?

“Yeah. Maybe next time I’ll have So I’m trying to figure out how this goes.”

On the fact that Maye watches him closely at practice and if he thinks about it:

“I’m not thinking about him watching me at all, But he has to watch me if I’m going. I’m watching him when he goes. And I think our room is a bunch of guys that has a lot to prove, I think to say. And it’s not just him pulling me aside. Zapp pulls me his aside, and Joe. And I think that’s the good thing about this room is we’re all obviously competing against each other, but we’re all trying to learn from each other and get each other better.”

On what he’s noticed from Bailey Zappe:

“Man, I like Zapp a lot, man. He just goes out there and competes. And the elephant in the room, this is a tough situation for him, and he’s accepted that. And he’s going out there every day and competing, and he’s doing a really good job and making a lot of plays. And I’m excited for his growth. And like I said, as an older player, he’s a kid to me still. But like I said, this whole room is getting better each and every day and making good strides.”
