The Patriots have yet to make a big splash in free agency, but they made a move on Monday during the legal tampering period to at least add some depth at running back.
According to NFL Media reporter Ian Rapoport, the Patriots agreed to terms with free agent running back Antonio Gibson.
Mike Reiss of ESPN reports that Gibson’s deal is for three years and is worth a maximum of $17.25 million.
Gibson, who is a former receiver, should provide the club with a versatile pass-catching running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson. It may also mean that the club could be moving on from Ezekiel Elliott, who is set to be a free agent.
The Patriots got a good look at Gibson this past season in Week 9 as the running back ended up tied with receiver Terry McLaurin against them that day with a team-high five receptions, with Gibson finishing with 42 yards receiving. He also carried six times for 34-yards (5.7 avg).
New England lost that one on the road in frustrating fashion, falling 20-17 to fall to 2-7 ahead of their trip to Germany.
Overall, Gibson finished the 2023 regular season rushing 65 times for 265 yards and a touchdown last season with the Commanders. He also caught 36 passes for 247 yards in 2023.
