Longtime New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty may still be unsure of his own NFL future, but he does have an idea of what it holds for one of his teammates.

Joining Good Morning Football on NFL Network Monday, McCourty shared a passionate defense of quarterback Mac Jones and his feeling that the starting job will remain his for the foreseeable future.

“‘Sources say Mac Jones rubbing people the wrong way.’ Who? Did he rub somebody the wrong way in a meeting? Probably,” McCourty said. “Have people left a meeting and said, ‘Man, Dev’s an a-hole today?’ … Mac came into a leadership role as a quarterback, and he speaks to what he thinks. He speaks about, ‘Hey man, I don’t like this play. I want to do this.’”

“What I love about Mac is that Mac came into a leadership role as a quarterback and he speaks to what he thinks,” McCourty continued.

“I think what people don’t always understand, in our locker room, Bill pushes that. We’re in the captains meeting every week, [and he’ll say] ‘If you don’t like something, tell us and we’ll throw it out.’ Because what’s the point of players going out there and saying, as soon as that call comes in, ‘I know we hate this call but …’ No one wants to be out there with that.”

McCourty’s lengthy answer came on the heels of a question regarding a recent report from Albert Breer that said Jones “rubbed people wrong” within the Patriots organization in 2022 to a point where his relationship with Bill Belichick “soured”.

With Bill O’Brien back in the fold as offensive coordinator, McCourty shared how it should add even more confidence in Jones heading into year three.

“What I’ll say about Mac is: the Combine is sponsored by No Bull this year; Mac is “no bull,” McCourty added. “They know the future is Mac Jones, and I’m excited for this guy this year because now you get Billy O’Brien coming in as an offensive coordinator. Great success. Has done well everywhere he’s been offensively. He gets to come in and now work with Mac.

“He’s going to have stability around him. I think the team is going to get another guy to be a receiver in that offense, hopefully, bring my guy Jakobi Meyers back and be a part of it.”

Meyers, the Patriots leading receiver the past two years, is entering free agency as one of the best available at the position and is projected to “do well” financially.

As for how it all goes down remains to be seen, but at least one Patriots veteran is providing some clarity regarding future speculation surrounding the young quarterback.

McCourty meanwhile, said that he’s still “not sure” about a potential return next season.
