For the first time since 2001, the New England Patriots found themselves at 2-3 through five games following a frustrating 18-12 defeat to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
The Patriots offense struggled to find any rhythm as both Cam Newton and Julian Edelman had their worst outings of the year.
Newton couldn’t find the end zone all afternoon and threw two interceptions leading to a season-worst 51.6 passer rating.
Speaking with WEEI on Monday, Newton expressed confidence in his team moving forward.
“There’s no need to press the panic button. There’s no need to start reinventing the wheel. We have the answers in that locker room,”
“I just have to be better, and I can’t stress that enough moving forward. The anticipation was off. I think that was the biggest discrepancy in not having practice,” Newton said. “Usually in most times, you can throw it way before the receiver is looking for it and be on the money with it. But not having practice for as long as I [haven’t] had practice, it just showed.”
As for Edelman, he had a season-low two receptions for eight yards on just six targets, but did complete two passes as quarterback following two trick plays on the final drive of the game.
Despite the forgettable performance, Edelman also isn’t panicking.
Edelman posted a photo to Instagram on Monday accompanied by a caption that read “Trust the process #keepgoing”.
Newton replied to positive Edelman’s message, writing “whole heartedly” in the comment section.
The Patriots will look to rebound next Sunday against an injury-depleted San Francisco 49ers team as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo makes his return to Foxboro.
