On Thursday, the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride reported via a league source that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick officially named Cam Newton the starting quarterback during a team meeting.
The former NFL MVP beat out Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer to land the job left empty by Tom Brady after 18 seasons.
In addition to earning top quarterback on the depth chart, Newton was also voted by his teammates as one of the eight 2020 captains, a rarity for first year players.
On his Instagram Thursday, Newton shared his reaction to the news.
“Dear New England, I will not and do not take this opportunity for granted! I am so grateful for this organization, my teammates, and this city. Thank You! No need to look back now…LFG!”
Speaking with reporters Friday, Newton explained his mindset through camp that led him to the job.
“A person might kind of sense it was almost expected, but not from me though,” Newton said. “Ever since I first spoke to any personnel with the team, I wanted to make sure they understood my drive and understand I’m not taking this opportunity for granted — whether it’s showing up as early as I do show up, or leave as late as I leave, I know people know that my heart is in the right place.
“As far as when it comes to this team, there is nothing I wouldn’t do besides put their best interest at heart. To be named a captain was just something that was just rewarding to hear, but at the same time, now the real work kind of starts for me.”
Newton’s Foxboro debut awaits in nine days against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.
