Just five years removed from an MVP season, newly signed Patriots quarterback Cam Newton isn’t getting paid like one.

On Sunday, Newton reportedly agreed to a one-year contract that includes just a $1.05 million base salary and only $550,000 in guaranteed money.

According to Boston.com, “Newton can earn another $700,000 in per-game roster bonuses and up to $5.75 million in additional incentives. The maximum value of his contract is $7.5 million.”

For perspective, in nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers, Newton earned over $121 million.

With zero other teams offering him a contract this offseason, Newton settled on the opportunity to revive his career with the Patriots.

Over the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Newton missed 16 games battling shoulder and foot injuries.

On his Instagram Thursday, Newton provided some clarity behind his decision to sign in New England.

“This is not about money for me; It’s about respect,” Newton wrote in his trademark font, which also included the hashtag’s #AllIknowIsWork and  #ImBettingItAllOnMe.

The good news for Newton, his contract reportedly doesn’t prevent the Patriots from placing a franchise tag in 2021, which could push his salary over $20 million beyond this season should he succeed.

For now, Newton will head into training camp later this July looking to earn back the respect he lost.
