Boston sports’ eldest statesman was the latest to say thank you and goodbye to Tom Brady this past weekend.
On Sunday, longtime Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara shared an Instagram photograph of himself and Brady accompanied by an emotional message.
“It’s with sadness and joy I find myself reflecting on the news of my friend and sports legend @TomBrady moving on from the @Patriots.
For New England and it’s fan base, Tom’s departure is a major loss to the role he plays in leading the incredible Patriots. His 20 years have brought us all some of the most memorable moments in sports history. His departure leaves us with mixed feelings. We feel a loss but we also hope that he continues to have an outstanding career.
Thank you Tom for the best 20 years of New England sports memories. Your leadership, athletic achievements and your contributions to Boston will forever be remembered by many generations. I wish you all the best. We will be watching and cheering you on!”
With Brady moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chara becomes the oldest active professional athlete in the City of Boston.
Chara’s teammate Patrice Bergeron now takes over for Brady as longest tenured active player in Boston.
Over the past two decades, Brady and Chara have developed a close friendship.
Before last June’s Stanley Cup Final, Brady lent his voice for a hype video shared over Chara’s Instagram page and Chara attended Brady’s TB12 center opening in Boston’s Back Bay in September.
Brady later commented on the Instagram post, letting Chara know that the feeling was mutual.
“I appreciate you Zee!” Brady said. “I feel the same about you my friend!!!”
