This past Friday, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning formally announced his retirement from the NFL after 16 seasons.
Tom Brady reached out with a congratulatory message over Twitter but also shared a rather funny admittance of truth.
Congratulations on your retirement, and a great career Eli! Not going to lie though, I wish you hadn’t won any Super Bowls.
— Tom Brady (@TomBrady) January 24, 2020
Brady, of course, lost two memorable and heartbreaking Super Bowls to Manning during his career.
During his retirement press conference, Manning was asked about the tweet and shared his reaction.
“I’ve been around Tom a number of times and see how competitive he is,” Manning said. “We joke around a little bit, but I think it’s not real funny to him.”
Manning also went on to say it was never about him versus Brady, and complemented his teammates for helping achieve their Super Bowl upsets.
“Everybody wants to make it me versus Tom Brady. It’s the Giants versus the Patriots. The defense was outstanding, guys made plays. David Tyree, Mario Manningham, Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone … You just cherish those moments.”
