On Thursday, Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team broadcaster Tyler Bieber was laid to rest following a tragic bus accident that killed Bieber and 15th other members of the team in rural Saskatchewan. He was 29 years old.

Bieber’s funeral was the first scheduled and took place in the Broncos home ice arena in Humboldt Thursday morning.

Bieber, as the internet discovered, grew up as a passionate fan of the New England Patriots on the prairies of western Canada.

Upon learning of the news, Patriots Owner and CEO Robert Kraft left a voicemail for Bieber’s mother and sent flowers to his funeral service as first reported by ESPN’s Emily Kaplan.

According to Kaplan, “Bieber was in his first year as a play-by-play announcer for the Broncos. The junior hockey team was en route to a playoff game last Friday when its bus collided with a truck carrying peat moss. Of the 29 people on board, 16 have died, including the team coach, players and bus driver.”

The crash is still under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
