Despite conflicting reports that suggested Jimmy Garoppolo could come back and start on Thursday night, it looks like he might be back on the sidelines for this week;s battle with the Texans.

The team released their injury report on Wednesday which has Garoppolo listed as “Doubtful”, which essentially means it’s unlikely he’ll play in Thursday’s game.  With the team not yet having downgraded him to out, that could mean it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him dress but not play against Houston.

That likely means that Jacoby Brissett will get his first NFL start and it’s a rare opportunity where a third-string quarterback will get a chance to suit up for the Patriots, which will be another tough challenge as the team looks to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Garoppolo was limited at practice on Wednesday along with six other players, who were all listed as “Questionable” against the Texans.  Those players included Dont’a Hightower (Knee), Eric Rowe (Ankle), Jonathan Cooper (Foot), Trey Flowers (Shoulder), Rob Gronkowski (Hamstring), Jonathan Freeny (Shoulder).

Meanwhile, there have been several reports that Julian Edelman spent some time getting acclimated as a back-up, which could mean that if Brissett was to get injured this week, the former quarterback from Kent State would get the call.

Back in 2013 Tom Brady joked about what Edelman must have been like as a quarterback in college,

“To play college quarterback with such – I’d love to see those old tapes of him running around because he’s kind of a spaz, I don’t know if you guys know that,” said Brady via NESN.com. “I always say, ‘God, what were you like in the huddle as a quarterback? How could anyone look at you seriously?’ But I guess he did pretty good. “He definitely can’t throw the ball so he made the right switch to receiver at the right time,” he jokingly added.

Hopefully, for at least another week, the Patriots will have a little better luck and Edelman won’t be needed at quarterback.
