Belichick May Be Questioning Glenn's Toughness

FOXBORO, MA — Wide receiver Terry Glenn once had a head coach question his toughness after he missed time during his rookie season with a hamstring pull.

He apparently may be close to hearing something similar from his current coach.

Former Patriots head coach Bill Parcells once referred to Glenn as “she” after he missed time during his rookie season back in 1996. Now it looks like his current hamstring injury may be wearing on the patience of current head coach, Bill Belichick.

Glenn missed the first four games of this season for serving a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and after coming back and playing well in his first game back two weeks ago, Glenn reportedly pulled up lame during a passing drill last week and hasn’t been able to do much ever since.

Prior to the Indianapolis Colts game Glenn said he wanted to play, but after not practicing much on Friday he was left on the inactive list, causing his agent Jim Gould to throw out accusations against the New England coaching staff saying “the gloves were off.” Belichick called the comments ridiculous and said that he felt both he and Glenn had a good relationship.

That may be changing.

Glenn practiced very little on Wednesday and after his comments prior to Sunday where he said he was ready to play, it left many wondering if he was willing to play through it then, why couldn’t he practice this week? No one obviously knows the answer except for Glenn, but the surprising thing was when asked if he would try and practice Thursday Belichick replied, “Will he try? I mean you’ll have to ask him.”

He was then asked if he was surprised that he hadn’t practiced after his claims of wanting to play last weekend.

“I don’t know if surprised is the right word,” said Belichick.

What would the right word be?

“Give me the thesaurus and let me flip through it. I don’t know. I don’t know what the right word would be. Surprised would not be it though.”

One has to wonder exactly what that word might be.

His teammates should be compelling him to play with the same type of toughness we saw last weekend from offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi, who earlier in the week went from being listed as OUT on the injury report to returning to the line-up on Sunday. Andruzzi played the entire game with a back brace and refused to be taken out. That’s something that few players don’t often do, and it’s pretty obvious that Gould may want to discuss that with his client other than pointing fingers in the wrong places.

“When you talk about leadership you can’t really get any higher form of leadership than [what Adnruzzi did last Sunday],” said Belichick. “Some guys stand up and can give a team speech and all of that, but to go out there and play and play hard when everything is not perfectly right for you, that shows toughness. It shows courage, it shows leadership, it shows commitment to the team, and that is probably the highest level you can do it on.”

“Then to be able to go out there and play well on top of all of that, not just show up and play, but actually show up and play well and play winning football that’s pretty impressive and Joe is a pretty impressive guy.”

Take a good look at Andruzzi, Terry. Or you may be disappointed when Belichick finally figures out what word he would like to use for you.
