I'm Fine With The Roster As Is

I seem to remember that there was a lot of upside for him before he was redshirted.. also not sure of the future of Pierre Woods.. has to come on strong this year or he is gone.

Woods doesn't seem to be a naturally dominant OLB, but he can set the edge okay. He is one of the best STers on the roster. You could maybe even win an argument to say he's the best.

Sorry, I have to post again. I don't want to be stuck on 666 posts for a week.

Good job on the roster. There is always a dark horse that makes the team based on training camp performance. Unfortunately there always seems to be one loss due to injury.

I agree with your thought about the injuries. I would be quite suprised to see training camp go by without one or more of the draft picks who is too valuable to release getting put on IR for a redshirt like Lua and Richardson were last season.

I'd of course prefer to see a fair number of rookies make the full roster because that would indicate that the coaching staff's level of confidence in them is high.

I'm not a big believer in the redshirt IR theory. I definitely wouldn't point to Lua, who was cut loose instantly after the season, as a guy they considered "too valuable to release."

I cannot recall a player who was redshirted and then became a starter.

OK...so how many "redshirted" players can you recall overall? Or to make the question more objective, how many Pats draft picks in the Belichick era have started their rookie seasons on IR...and when were they drafted? To be fair, it has to work in that direction -- start with all the players in a category and then see what became of them.

Most of the instant IR guys I can think of off the top of my head were day-2 picks, and the base rate of day-2 picks becoming starters under BB is about 1 in 7. So you'd need a pretty big sample of "redshirts" to draw any conclusions about the effect of the IR time on a player's future.

The big exception to the above is of course Chad Jackson, who is currently on the Stephen Neal plan -- spending most of his first two seasons on IR. I'll give him an incomplete.

p.s. Watson managed only part of one game before hitting the IR...

Wasnt Gaffney back and forth between the PS the first year as a FA?

As far as those rooks on IR go
02---RB Antoine Womack...came in with a knee injury, really never got back to being healthy.
03---OL Gene Mruczkowski..was on PUP-non football relate dinjury (a knee), then IR that year, Was here for a few years on an doff and back again.
---QB Kliiff Kingsbury...a hand/wrist injury?? Cut teh next year.
04---TE Ben Watson reported late, had a knee injury and was gone for the year.
---WR PK Sam had a knee injury in preseason and was cut the next year
05---WR Michael McGrew was on IR pre-TC but cut the next year in TC.
---LB Ryan Claridge had pre-existing injuries, on IR,cut way before camp the next year.
06---DB Gemera Williams on IR TC cut the next year and brought back on PSqd.
07---LB Oscar Lua injured his knee in the last preseason game, out for year and cut early.
DB Mike Richardson injured his arm preseason and will be in TC this year.

Redshirt?? I don't think so..more like players that were injured, needed long rehab. The only one I can think of that might have been questionable was QB Kingsbury,

Good stuff, thanks. I think the key here is that only one of those players could have been expected to be a starter pre-injury, and he in fact became a starter. Guys like McGrew and Lua would surely have been cut outright if not for injuries, so the IR year wasn't a factor in their non-factorness.

Richardson was a longshot to start with and is looking up at some decent veteran depth, but I don't see any reason to assume the missed year will be a big factor in itself. Especially since the injury was to his hand, which should mean little impact on his athleticism and conditioning.

I hope this thread ends the idea that the patriots, as part of their team strategy, put someone on IR with a fake or greatly exagerrated injury. That happened once, with Kingsbury.

I'm thinking of bookmarking it for the next time the word "redshirt" raises its ugly head....

I agree...those that say that have not looked at the players and their injuries..Redshirts are more likely those on the PSqd..which is where they should be developed..

Okay is it just me... am I having a brain fart but what is the word on Seau? has anyone heard yet?
