Pats sign TE Marcus Pollard

He's also the guy who the Pats' DB's held right in front of the refs on successive plays late in that AFCCG that led to the League cracking down on defensive holding/PI the next season. I had it TIVOed and watched that one over and over--it was literally right in front a ref (from about 3 yards away).....

So, what does one have to do with the other? I asked a question about Marcus Pollard and you bring up the defensive holding crap.

Yes, the league cracked down on it after that game. Yes, the Pats still won the SB that year, regardless.

Not much of a blocker. He was more of an athlete than a football player. He used his speed with his size to cause mismatches. Get used to hearing this. "Did you know that Marcus didn't play college football? He played basketball for Bradley." Colts fans heard that nearly every game single game for 10 years. You could do worse for a number 3 if he signed for near the minimum.

Sheesh... I f'in hate this guy. What a sh*tty signing.

Finally, a sane post.

you're all missing the point of this signing. every year we sign an old guy who shows up for training camp, and then promptly retires. Pollard is this years t.c. retiree. It's a tradition now ya know. :D

Don't think he's returing...I think this has MORE to do with Ben Watson's condition..could mean he will be PUPed and they wanted a vet receiving tight end..as opposed to needing Thomas or Spach or a rook to step up....I like it..he's tough...GREAT signing.

Pure BS, Pollard ran right into our defender who grabbed him rather than get knocked over on his butt. One of those plays was a hold, the other was offensive pass interference, much more blatant than the one called on Troy Brown in the 07 AFCCG which took away what would have been the winning points for the Patriots.

Have to disagree on that--in both cases the Pat defender clearly had his jersey from behind up around the shoulder pads, so much so that his head was clearly jerked back each time. What amazed me was that it was clearly in front of a ref watching the whole thing each time. There are none so blind as those who will not see....

After 5 years, the Colts finally beat the Pats in the playoffs and win their elusive Super Bowl, .........and yet you still whine about something that is absolutely irrelevant. Sheesh, maybe it's time to seek professional help for that?

Meh I dont like it.

Kyle Brady>Pollard

Good receiver in his day, great lockeroom guy. I'd guess he'll be a coach some day, he does a really good job of mentoring young receivers and tight ends. Part time player I'd guess at best, at his age.

Last training camp they were shorthanded at tight end, I think this signing is just to ensure that they aren't forced to sign a street nobody in August because someone (Watson, Thomas, Spach) gets banged up.

Hard to get excited about the signing of a training camp body, but Pollard is a smart signing.

Moved????? This I do not understand...this is the Patriot Forum isn't it?? Just curious...

Meh I dont like it.

Kyle Brady>Pollard

Kyle Brady failed a physical.

Besides, Kyle Brady's blocking was overrated, especially by the end of last season. He wasn't blocking crap. Believe me.

Any scouting reports on Pollard's blocking? I haven't found much other than the article I posted and his own references of taking pride in his blocking, and taking pride in blocking for Edge and pass protecting for Manning, etc.

2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 57http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/scouts/news/story?id=2996209
Alert: None

Comment: Pollard is more of a move tight end or H-back than a true inline tight end, which is what the Lions need from the position. He was released to open up salary cap room but also was never a real good fit in Mike Martz's offense. Last season was the worst of Pollard's career by a large margin. As tight ends go, he is undersized but moves well and is a crisp route-runner. He has good hands, and although he isn't as quick or sudden as he once was, he can still separate from many linebackers. He demonstrates good body control and overall savvy in the passing game. He does a very good job of finding the soft spots in zone coverage and understands how to get open. Pollard has been productive in the red zone over his career, and in the right system he could be once again, but he is not a big-play weapon. He is a poor inline blocker and consistently struggles to move defensive ends off the ball. He has good feet and is a positional blocker, but he lacks power and pop. Pollard still has a role in the league as a move tight end.

59- 50: Good Backup
A player who is on the bubble and starts only because of a deficiency at the position ... He lacks complete overall skills, and although he will battle he will hinder his team's ability to play at a championship level if he is forced to be in the starting lineup consistently over a 16-game season ... A player you don't mind having on your team but someone you are always looking to upgrade.

When he was with the Colts they also had Ken Dilger. Dilger was the blocker and sure hands guy and Pollard was the guy that caused mismatches and stretched the field. He was not know for his blocking while in Indy. I'm not saying he didn't block, but that wasn't his strong suit.

I really hate Colts. I mean, not personally, but I don't want them on my team. It's like Bin Laden joining my synagogue.

Pollard should have been flagged for running into the defender and picking him the way Troy Brown was in the 07 AFCCG.
