Patriots Rumors: Eliot Wolf ‘Pushing Hard’ For This QB Prospect

If I was the Redskins GM and knew about Wolf's lust for JJ, I would drop a rumor bomb that I was going draft JJ hoping to snooker Wolf into trading up. Or is that too devious?
One such rumor came out last week saying Washington wants JJ at 2. I thought that was to try to drum up trade interest from Minnesota but also found it strange since it seems unlikely they would want to miss out on the QB crop and go down to 11 when they have their pick of anyone besides Williams.

But now in light of this story, it may actually be the case that Washington learned that NE wants McCarthy, so they’re simply trying to swindle NE into trading up 1 draft slot for a premium. That would make a lot more sense as far as Washington’s motivations.

Of course, it could also be the case that NE is purposefully making it known who they like. It’s well known that Minnesota likes McCarthy also, so NE can say actually we want him so you gotta trade up with us to get him, but our asking price is HIGH… Or possibly work out other deal frameworks with specific contingencies.

Some of you guys place way too much importance in what is in the Media.

Teams aren't basing their strategy around what some journo reports. Sure there may be little things here and there that might give them food for thought but they have much better sources of info than the journos.

now the vikings are crying wolf's driving up the price for jj like it's something bad.....waaaahhhh

Did you watch the game? They could not block Chop Robinson at all. Harbaugh was not there, so Sherone Moore took over. Here is what is funny, when Bill B had Mac throw 3 passes against the Bills. People lauded Bill, granted the weather was horrible and a lot of people were like Mac is such a team player and is unselfish team player. Now JJ was in that position and people are like HE IS ****!!

I haven’t seen anyone call JJ McCarthy “‘****,” what I have seen s many rank him lower than the top 3 because he had far less production, which means their evaluations are based on projected size , arm strength, and mechanics. And in all honesty other than BGC, and possibly a couple of others, those talking about his mechanics in comparison to other QB’s are completely talking out of their asses, as other than a prospect throwing off of their back foot they don’t know jack **** about the subject. It’s like when I see an Amatuer draftnik saying a cornerback has “ tight hips…” and I think “ whatever you say Mel….”

Brady spent years working with his personal QB coaches perfecting his mechanics, and they are far more technical and minute than 99% of Amatuer draftniks understand. And I include myself in that category. Also, there’s a difference between looking at arm strength and accuracy, as opposed to “ mechanics,” as those things aren’t mechanics, and are far easier for an Amatuer to observe. It’s pretty obvious that Joe Milton has a great arm, and it’s also obvious he’s really inaccurate.

If they do that they should be fired on the spot.

For the Pats to trade #3 given our current circunstances it should be a kings ramson like no one ever seen before.
We need a QB, this is a good class, good chances we are not drafting that high again in the upcoming years, that means, no shot at a great qb prospect again.

Get it done, get your QB, then figure it out all the other needs AFTER you have a QB.

It’s criminal. The Vikings should press charges . Wolf could be looking at up to 5 years of hard labor under current Shenanigans laws. However this doesn’t go without risk to Kevin O’Vonnell and Co. as the Patriots can counter charge the Vikings under the same criminal act for picking up a second 1st round pick and making people believe they want to trade up for a Quarterback. Shenanigans laws cut both ways.

This is actually just an article about Vikings FANS accusing the Patriots of driving up the price... not the Vikings themselves.

And I also find this a bit silly. The Patriots are considered idiots for liking McCarthy at 3rd overall, but these types of stories imply that the Vikings would be seeking to trade up to 3 themselves to also take McCarthy, meaning that the Vikings also view McCarthy as worth the exact same value. Nobody is saying Minnesota is stupid. So what gives?

The more I think about this, the more I think Wolf is trying to get someone to trade up to to #2 to get McCarthy ahead of the Pats, so whoever they want of the other two is there.

The Washington Commanders have traded the #2 pick to whoever blinked on Wolf's bluff...

My gut tells me that we take Drake Maye, then a stud WR1 in round 2.

Sit Maye a year as we build up the O line in the next draft/FA and Maye develops.

They need to excite the fanbase, I'll eat my hat if they trade down.
I'll be excited if they move down. What makes the draft better is when teams move back and end up with better players than those picked ahead of them.

What kind of hat are you wearing btw? I hope it isn't one of these...

I saw someone’s mock draft this morning that had the Redskins selecting McCarthy with the 2nd pick. Could he have impressed teams that much?
JJ McCarthy is a proven winner at the college level playing for Jim Harbaugh in a pro-style offense. His footwork is great and his decision-making quick. He's a great prospect for team like the Commanders that have so many pieces in place for a rookie QB to succeed. The big question is his size and durability. At 6'3", 210 he needs to bulk up to survive in the NFL, but at just 21, that's not such a big deal.

i don't know.... may not be just the fans, ben leber is an ex linebacker for the vikings so he may be hearing this from the team

if that is the strategy it’s kind of genius.

Keep in mind that whoever the Patriots draft to play QB will need to watch from the sidelines for most of his first year due to the fact that even the new coaches do not know the new scheme let alone the players.
Let him learn a little before he gets in there. That worked pretty well for Brady and Mahomes.

I'm still fascinated about JJM. I never saw him or heard his name before some stranger sat down next to me at a bar months ago in NH for a quick drink. He asked me if I was a football fan and said only the pros. He told me to keep an eye on a kid named JJ McCarthy and then walked out. Since meeting that guy the name has been coming up more and more often here.

Wit we draft McCarthy pair him up with Roman Wilson.
If we draft Maye pair him up with Tez Walker.
The fact we have shown a lot of interest in Tez tells me that is the ideal scenario.

Draft your QB and his school WR.

If you draft Maye at 3 if he’s there.
You can trade down with your second round pick and still get Tez in the early third end of the second.

If your target is McCarthy you may have to take Wilson at 34 or with a slight trade down.

The temptation to draft Nabors or Harrison JR is also incredibly strong as well if you feel really good with a Pennix, Nix, Rattler.

You didn't make the statement about the Vikings front office as a "maybe" you made it as a certainty. Now you are backing off with a random guess.

It is easier to just acknowledge that we have no information, just a lot of media click bait.

That's interesting.
Any QB and WR will need to get reprogrammed at some level, changing their responses in split seconds and unwinding bad habits from college, so they could also end up reinforcing the wrong things in each other.
Just guessing here.

There weren't 70 MPH winds in State College, Pennsylvania, on the day in question.
Those high-wind days in Buffalo are awesome. Watching the kickers kick in a crosswind is the best.

Nobody really knows anything for sure, even the teams making the choices. Hopefully the Pats make the right choices or we'll be having extra Mayo nays in the threads here.

It worked for Burrow and Chase.
It’s more about acclimating to the NFL for me.
For instance Maye raves about Tez, bringing those two together sets up a foundation of comfort. Also come contract time do you really want to leave your friend?

It is possible that they love one of Maye or Daniels, and the way to guarantee that guy is available without leaking that they like him is to pump up McCarthy and get him to go at 2, either to Washington themselves or to a trade partner. Then Maye and Daniels would both be available at 3 and they could take whichever guy they like.

I do have a hard time believing Washington will actually trade down though. They need a QB as bad as NE does, their 2023 guys were Sam Howell (traded) and Brissett (now a Patriot). I think the only QB on their roster is Jake Fromm. And their offensive roster is not as bad as NE’s, so it makes less sense to “build around the QB first” - the QB is the big hole.

Wolf seemed impressed at Mccarthys pro day.
I’m sure his interest is legit.
Whether he likes him as much or more than Maye or Daniel’s.
We will have a clearer answer to that on draft day.
