NESN: Hard to Believe This Monstrosity Almost Became Pats Logo

...said the guy who's team has the worst logo and uniform in sports...
Heehee. You talking about the old Expos craptastic logo ? It’s proof I stand by my comment ! If I can have that on my ball cap, I can have anything !

I was there for the 'vote' game. Not even Goodell draws the kind of booing that monstrosity got from us. Back when the team was the redheaded step child of Boston sports we long timers sported Pat Patriot gear like a badge of honor.
I was there too...Wasn't that the same day that Rick Waits beat the Yankees to force the one game playoff? Or was that a different Pats game I was at?

IIRC you are off by a year

Sunday, October 1, 1978, and El Tiante shut out the Jays to force the playoff at Fenway.

We beat the Chargers at Schaefer 28-23 on the way to the AFC East title.

It was on Sunday, September 23, 1979 we beat the Chargers again 27-21 when Pat Patriot and our real uniforms ruled at halftime.

Oh this is going to chafe for APF...

It’s Hard To Believe The Patriots’ Logo Almost Became This Monstrosity

Yes, praise for both the present logo and the old cartoon logo... and bile for the squared off man in the mountain they tried to roll out wayyyyy before (and way different from) the Flying Elvis. You could call this the "Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches Elvis." Heavy and vomit-inducing.

But not the same as either the predecessor or the present.

I was at that game, and to be honest I had forgot what what that logo looked like, thanks for posting.

The vote was based on applause & Pat Patriot won easily.

Could this be a Laurel or Yanny thing?

I mean, I count at least two dozen virtually identical similarities between these two.

You ever see the "Bizarro Superman" character? It's like that.

There's a reason it's the Nike Swoosh, not the Nike Rectangle.

A thousand iterations back, who knows what shapes were in the running. Who knows what colors were in the running.

You have no eye if you believe the 79 logo is the present logo (regardless of how many "identical similarities" you count.)

However, it is evident that in the development of the present logo, the designer said "Hey, look at this... you think this could be anything?"

Or for that matter, someone could have said "Oh just work from what Orthwein's nephew did with that pre-release Microsoft Paint." Then 2,000 hours later, ta da.

That's not the same thing as the logos having the same impact or value.

But hey, that cartoon nobody won anything wearing is cute, and I know guys got attached. Winning logo is good stuff too though :D

Cappelletti, Parilli, Grogan, Hannah, Adams et al. are "nobody" -

Just like Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice and the Red Sox.

And just like Ray Bourque, Cam Neely and the Bruins.

And just like Bob Cousy and the Celtics before 1956; and Paul Pierce and the Celtics before 2007.

'flying elvis' is 'proto elvis' - 200 years later.

'79: White faced, inscrutable, listless bumbler, in baby light blue, ready to get his ass kicked by eyepatched Randolph Scott, or winking Bucco Bruce, or whoever our opponent is that day.

'93: Grey faced, rotting, frowning walking dead remains of what's left of him, in toxic dark blue, encapsulating the permanent expression after the latest Bledsoe interception.

- unhappy dreary, dreadful right facing profile
- trails of red...blood?...oozing out from behind
- silhouette of some kind of hat
- white star depicting the hole left behind after real Patriots fan shot him at point blank range

Aw, yeah! The bat signal has been turned on. Wait! I hear his theme music now...

Na na na na na na na na...
Na na na na na na na na...
APFMAN!

Regards,
Chris
Flying Elvis still sucks.
I was at that game. I of course booed the hell out of the proposed new logo.

Literally every entry here sucks compared to

Nobody knows that pine tree flag exists, but I did initially think of the Lebanese flag. I didn't expect much here, and a sideways facing Pat Patriot with the new headgear totally fit the not-much expectations.

HOWEVER, those "NE" helmets, with Elvis-Without-A-Face on the reverse side? That's sorta cool.

And might I add... we can all agree that Tampa Bay's alarm-clock numbers are the single worst uniform element in the league (right after they retired the gay pirate too.)

I don't bother signing into other teams' forums, but how much you wanna bet that some "Actual Broncos Fan" is obsessed with bringing back the real logo...

By the way.... I could support a front view skull face across the front of the helmet, wearing a navy blue hat which on the sides gets the star in the corner and tapers into the "Elvis Without a Face" logo... So the biker skull is barely visible in the side view but the lion's share of what you see lining up against it, so you think "what kind of sick f*** thinks of a thing like that..."
