Players that you have been wrong about

Ok, it's the beginning of the year and I'm thinking back to all the times that I've been wrong about a guy. Here's are my lists:

Guys that I thought were stiffs that turned out to be good:

1. Jojo Lafell. I thought the guy was the biggest piece of trash in history after his first few games as a Patriot. When I complained to my buddy, he famously said "don't even let him get on the bus to go home. Cut him now."
Turned into a major contributor on a championship team.

2. Cordarell Patterson. When I first started watching him play, I only saw his limitations. Not a great route runner, fell down a lot, hands were average.
Turned out the guy was tough as nails, fought for extra yards with tenacity only seen by maybe Edelman from the wide receiver position, and had big play ability.

3. Marcus Cannon. Honestly I thought he couldn't even play in the league at one point. Has turned himself into a very good football player.

4. (the bad one) Sony Michel.
I was the idiot that said in the game thread that I'd be the first one to say that Michel can't play. I then almost got figuratively lynched by the other members, and rightly so. I observed a lack of explosiveness (he was probably hurt), and a tentativeness that he eventually overcame.
For the record, I could not have been more wrong. He is a great football player. And I think he's going to be even better this year than he was last year.

Guys that I thought would be good that turned out to be stiffs:

1. Dan Klecko.
Always seemed to be around the ball. Was one of the few rookies that got praised early by Belichick. Had hall of fame pedigree. I thought he would be great- he sucked.

2. Ras-I Dowling.
I loved what I saw when I first watched him. Ok, maybe he wasn't a total stiff, just a guy that could not stay on the field. I thought we were getting a pro bowl player for years to come. I was wrong.

3. Aaron Dobson.
Seemed to get great separation when they first drafted him. Seemed to have great talent. Turned into a complete bust.

4. Jermaine Cunningham.
Athletic, big, strong, and seemed to make big plays in big spots. Couldn't even stay in the league.
Measurables matter IMO, at list for some positions, and BB and Company have dismissed slower 40 times because of intangibles.....and whiffed spectacularly. Refer to past 2nd round DBs.

When the Pats drafted LB Spikes, I knew it was only a matter of time before opponents exploited his non existent speed.

Then there is BB’s willingness to ignore an injury history during college if he sees value. Gronkowski was a win but a few too many high picks continued their injury patterns in the pros. Easley, Glass I Dowling, etc.

Difficult to nitpick when there is a 50% SB appearance rate.... but that’s why God created message boards for the anonymous.

i have been correct about every single player. i have never been wrong. i am perfect. Kneel before thee.

Oh, Bill would have hired you to work alongside Ernie on draft day.
But I've heard he's embarrassed by your name.

laurence maroney he showed promise his rookie year

Two guys I really liked before the draft and was psyched the Pats picked:
Darius Butler
Ras-I Dowling

Two guys I was really skeptical of to start with:
Marcus Cannon
Duron Harmon

Honestly, Harmon should be on a lot more of these lists! There was such fury at yet another wasted pick on a safety nobody had ever heard of, and grumbling about Belichick's Rutgers obsession.

(I know it's breaking the spirit of this thread, but one of my rare hits: I actually mocked James White to the Patriots. As in suggested in a mock draft, not laughed at. ;))

Laurence Maroney...... he wasn’t a dancer in college

Monty Biesel - I didn’t think anyone could suck so bad....then came Jordan Richards

I thought Thuney was a wasted pick

Adalius Thomas. He was a 3 time All-Pro coming off a 11 sack season and should have been entering the prime of his career.
Instead we got a malcontent troublemaker who was my least favorite Pat in the BB era.
Never trust a ratbird

Never thought James White would amount to much. Really happy to be wrong.

Where oh where are the multitudes of Pats fans who cried for the crucifiction of Julian Edleman for years??? Why aren't they fessing up??? Oh... I know!!! They are busy eating their heaping plates of crow!!!

I think the Pats paid him too much also. He had one decent season and then turned into crappola. Does anyone think he was a spy for the Ravens? Hmmmm.

For about 3 years I had no idea why Matt Slater was on the team. My friends and I joked that he had nudies of BB and was holding them as blackmail . But then one game I actually watched the punt unit, and understood. Then a quick google search later and I learned all about the gunner position.

Off the top of my head:

I was wrong about:

Seymour: didn’t think he was anything special. Wanted Terrell. So did everyone and their Mom. Lol.

Mankins: my friends laughed me out of the room. I went home angry.

Maroney and Jackson: I was ecstatic they drafted both due to their measurables. However, I thought D’Angelo Williams and Greg Jennings were the safer bets. Both of them have mentioned they are bitter the Pats drafted Maroney and Jackson ahead of them.

Welker: wasn’t excited about giving up a 2nd round pick.

Gronk: I was worried about his back.

McCourty: wanted Dez Bryant.

Darius Butler: I thought he’d be good.

Ninkovich: thought he was trash early on. Didn’t understand why he was still on the team.

Derek Rivers: I cant defend him anymore after going on IR again.

Tom Brady: back in the day we didn’t have access to what we do now. They just signed Bledsoe to $100 million extension, they just signed Friez as a back up and they drafted Michael Bishop. So I thought he wouldn’t even make the team.

The list of people who were wrong about Brady is a very, very long list.

Since I don't follow college ball at all I don't come in with any preconceived notions about any player. In almost all cases the first time I see any player is when they enter the NYFL.

I can however pass judgement on players who come here from other teams. In that case I hope I'm wrong about Michael Bennett.

Danny Amendola. I remember wanting him cut in his first season with us. Made some good plays, but overall a disappointment and made me think we made a mistake letting Welker go. But Amendola played like a beast when it mattered (playoffs). I am glad he wasn't cut and I miss losing him on the team.

I definitely messed up on multiple occasions.

I thought I couldn’t have been more right on 2nd round cb’s being busts, then they took ras i and turns out i was much smarter than I thought.

Then there was the year I said wed go 14-2, thought maybe id come within a game or two on that prediction. Wrong again, they went 14-2 and i was actually spot on.

I also said haynesworth would last 10 weeks max here when we acquired him, they actually cut him way before that when bb finally saw what i saw right out the gate.

We’re all human

Oh so many... Ochocinco, Dobson, Easley, Dowling, Wheatley, wilhite, meriweather... same as Belichick pretty much.

Right on Jimmy G, liked him from the first preseason game. Had high hopes for Meriweather, could have been a stud.

Stork lost the job because of injuries and was never able to get better. He ended up being traded to Washington, failed the physical and was cut.
I agree. The talk during the 2014 season was how he brought some physicality to the line. Didn’t he start to go nuts though?

You don’t think he’s any good?

No, he's very good. I'm just worried that he's out of control and may hurt us with a dumb play/penalty at the wrong time.

I was wrong about moss. Thought he was done after the raiduhs
