Grogan and the 76 Pats

Good video.

In our nation's bicentennial year, the New England Patriots were the best team in the National Football League.

Ben Dreith officiated for ten years in the AFL, and doubtless personally considered the Patriots to be a second-rate, slipshod franchise.

While there was substance to that opinion in the front office, obviously nothing justifies abject bias on the football field. That sh*thead refereed Super Bowls before and after his debacle which robbed this team of the world championship in 1976.

I promise you that Chuck Fairbanks never believed anyone would carry it to such extremes as Dreith did on that terrible day.

I would like to take this moment to personally say to Dreith, "F*ck you.

East sh*t and die, you stinking, worthless scum."

I never really got to see him play, but my father used to talk about him all the time. Great vid.

Yup 1976 I became a Pat's Fan thanx to Grogan. What a Special Year only to get robbed by none other an NFL* Ref on a BS roughing passer call on Sugar Bear Hamilton . They bailed Stabler out or its my fave teams going to SB that in'76 Pats vs Vikes Grogan vs Tarkenton.

I would love to be able to see Grogan play in this era of no pass defense allowed.

I was a kindergartener in 1976 so I do not have real-life appreciation of this team but looking up and down the roster they were freaking loaded.

What I do know is w/o Grogs they do not go to the 1985 SB or win the division the following year.

Moved back from Europe to Stamford CT in 1976 - hadn't watched football in 3 years. I decided all of CT was "part of New England" and became a die hard fan after the playoff loss. Loved Grogan, Francis, Stingley, the backs, Nelson etc

And then Raymond 'Room Temperature IQ' Berry replaced him with Tony 'She Wears a Skirt' Eason.

Solid thread, from a person who started a thread called "We have basically clinched the bye week already (Seed 2 minimum)" and touted his math skills, saying that the rest of us just could not understand it!

That was a very good offensive team Grogan, Stingley, Cunningham, Francis, Andy Johnson, Hannah, Leon Gray, etc.

Defensively they were decent as well Nelson, Julius Adams, Hamilton, Haynes, Fox etc.

It was a different game then; Grogan only threw 300 passes with a 48% completed, they rushed for about 600 times.. so the game was quite different. Grogan rushed 60 times and scored 12 TD's... he was a tough bastard.

Never quite understand why the Patriots never posthumously put Stingley in their HOF... he was a defenseless receiver maimed forever by Jack Tatum, aka the "Assassin", it was a legal hit according to the rules at that time, but to just walk away from him as he lie on the field was unforgivable..

I love watching at about the one minute mark, where the guard was looking for someone, anyone to block. You don't see that today. And a little later, the slo-mo of the lineman huffing and puffing downfield, running BEHIND Grogan trying to catch up and stay in the play.

And in 1978 NE set the still-standing NFL single-season rushing record with 3165 yd. The main rushers were:
Sam Cunningham- 768, 8 TD
Horace Ivory - 693, 11 TD
Andy Johnson - 675, 3 TD
Steve Grogan - 539, 5 TD
Don Calhoun - 391, 1 TD

(They also had 2800 net passing yards.)

Can someone fix the title? It's driving me crazy! :)

I ask people that trivia question and have never received the correct answer. Back to 76. Mike Haynes had an incredible rookie year. I believe Howard Cosell had him as his NFL MVP not ROY.
