1st and 10 NE 20
Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, Incomplete, quick out.
Offense: 4 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Watson right slot, Dillon wide right, TE Graham standing right wing.
Defense: 4-3, OLBs 5 yards off slot WRs, SS 10 yards behind WLB, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light cuts the RDE on the edge
Mankins sits in reserve
Hochstein bounces off the RDT, who drops into coverage
Neal stands up the LDT
O’Callaghan rides the LDE outside
Coverage: Caldwell does a quick slant past the RCB and into the WLB zone
Brown does a quick out into the left flat
Graham does a quick hook underneath the MLB
Watson is released by the zoned SLB into the right flat on a quick out
Dillon is disregarded by the LCB, watching Watson, on a sideline route
Analysis: Light cleared the passing lane by getting an adequate cut block on the RDE. Brady’s throwing motion seemed awkward and forced despite throwing from a clean pocket. The RCB was decisive and went for Brown upon the throw instead of waiting to see if it would go to his left, to Caldwell. The pass came in behind Troy, who had to stop, turn around, and extend his arms. With the RCB coming on strong, it appeared Troy took his eye off the ball for a second and brought his arms back in to brace for the hit, and the ball sailed past. The RCB Rogers knocked Brown to the ground shortly thereafter.
2nd and 10 NE 20
Result: Pass, Dillon from Brady, play action, dumpoff left under pressure, 39 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Watson left slot, Brown wide right, TE Graham down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded defensive left, SS 5 yards off slot, both CBs press coverage.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside, who loses his balance and falls forward into Light’s legs
Mankins chips the stunting RDT before releasing ahead of the dumpoff and repeatedly knocking the RCB downfield until sideline running room is lost
Hochstein stands up the LDT before coming out ahead of the dumpoff and knocking the FS down trying to pursue Dillon
Neal blocks the WLB into the ground in the second level
O’Callaghan stands up the LDE and shadows him in downfield pursuit
Graham stands up the blitzing SLB before releasing on the dumpoff
Caldwell is jammed at the line by the RCB but can’t get ahead of Dillon far enough to block after the catch
Watson clears out the SS deep before shoving him out of bounds beyond the tackle
Brown does a slant pattern to get the blocking angle on the LCB
Dillon took the play action and hit traffic from the LDT at the line, but turned around for the pass just in time
Analysis: The MLB would come on a delayed blitz between Graham and O’Callaghan, pressuring Brady to the ground after the pass. Nevertheless, Brady showed great patience staring down a blitzer, waiting for Dillon to turn for the pass. Dillon caught the pass amidst a crowded line, but then found open space as Hochstein and Brown both made good blocks to seal the inside. Mankins, Caldwell, and Watson would sprint and get some downfield hits on defenders. Graham released the blitzing SLB to pursue blocks downfield, but he was reluctant and allowed the SLB to blow right past him and eventually take down Dillon along the sidelines. Mankins got a few good hits on the RCB as they ran downfield, but lost his positioning when defenders forced Dillon into the sideline and the RCB Rogers helped on the stop with the SLB.
Note: Dillon got a faceful of dirt after the play, wiped his face with a towel, but did not return.
1st and 10 Was 41
Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, play action, deep post, pass underthrown, 36 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown wide right motion inside 3 paces, 2 TE, Watson down off LT, Graham down off RT, Maroney lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, RCB press coverage, LCB 10 yards off.
Blocking: Watson and Light ride the RDE outside
Mankins bounces the RDT off the line and then comes out to finish him off
Hochstein and Neal double the LDT
O’Callaghan chips the LDT before sliding outside and picking up the LDE
Graham chips the LDE inside before releasing into the flat
Coverage: Maroney flares into the right flat after the fake and is picked up by the SLB
Caldwell does a crossing pattern against the RCB
Brown goes up the seam before slipping behind the FS
Analysis: The off-tackle play fake was perfect, keeping all 3 LBs low and towards the fake. Both TEs stayed in to block, all but assuring a clean pocket after the play action. Brown was released deep by the LCB, who gave a big cushion in zone coverage. The Pats went high/low on the FS Taylor, cutting Caldwell in front and slipping Brown in back. The throw had a low trajectory, but the FS had his back turned and was trying to catch up. Brown reached down, hauled it in, and then rolled forward for the 36 yd. gain.
1st and 5 Was 5
Result: Run, Maroney, left guard, 5 yds., TOUCHDOWN.
Offense: 2 WR, Stone wide left, Caldwell wide right, 2 TE, Graham down off LT, Watson motion to QB and back to left wing, Maroney lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, SS in box over left wing, both CBs 5 yards off.
Blocking: Watson comes behind the line and traps the SLB
Graham drives the WLB off the edge
Light turns the RDE outside
Mankins avoids a stab at his legs by the RDT but can’t get the MLB in the second level
Hochstein gets his legs taken out from behind and falls on top of the RDT
Neal drives the LDT into the ground left
O’Callaghan drives the LDE into the ground left
Stone can’t catch up to the SS coming in so he gets a lick on the RCB in the endzone
Caldwell blocks the LCB
Analysis: Maroney’s hole was narrow because of all of the guys on the ground to his right, but he managed to squeeze right past the RDE trying to scrape off Light. He then slipped free of the SS Archuleta’s attempt from the side, and stumbled the rest of the way into the endzone.
