I'll get started sometime tomorrow.

The starters were in for awhile, so I'll probably take the first series and go from there.

Gotcha, take the 1st Qtr, I'll work on the 2nd.

Sticky? :D

This should be a fun game to breakdown! I thought Vrabel looked AWESOME on defense, like he was trying to upstage Seau a bit. Nothing like some good competition in the middle. Rodney looked a bit tenative, which you might expect. He didn't take his late shots like he usually does right as the whistle is blowing, but my wife was about ready to cry about seeing him back on the field. Wright looked great, and fought thru a double team or two.

What can you say about the O-Line? AWESOME. This will probably be Watson's easiest game of the year, but with Brown as our only WR option of note, he'll get his chances. Caldwell??????????????????

I hope Cobbs makes the damn roster.

First Half

Kickoff: Maroney from the NE 5, 36 yd return, Maroney works off Sanders and Alexander blocks along the sideline but FUMBLES at NE 41, ball out of bounds.

Offensive Series #1 Field Goal

Contributor: Pats1
Time: 15:00 remaining in the first quarter
Statistics: 11 plays (5 run, 5 pass, 1 field goal), 54 yards (12 run, 30 pass, 12 penalty), time of possession was 6:26
Breakdown: 3 green plays (0 run, 2 pass, 1 field goal) for 15 yds., 4 black plays (3 run, 1 pass) for 13 yds. (9 run, 4 pass), 4 red plays (2 run, 2 pass) for 4 yds. (3 run, 2 pass)., 12 penalty yards gained for the Patriots.

1st and 10 NE 41

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 3 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Troy tight right, 2 TE, Watson in motion right wing to RG and back, Graham down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded defensive left, FS comes up late showing blitz, SS drops off after Watson motion, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light seals the backside against the RDE Carter
Mankins pulls right and knocks the blitzing FS Taylor out of the hole
Koppen turns left to take on the RDT Salave’a but is trampled from behind by Neal
Neal drives the LDT Killings left but into Koppen
O’Callaghan bulldozes the LDE Wynn left and out of the hole
Graham gets physical with the MLB Marshall ahead of the run, but doesn’t get a good angle
Watson initially seals off the SLB Washington on the right edge but the SLB slides downfield and breaks free just as Dillon is being brought down
Brown races inside but runs into Mankins and the FS

Analysis: The blitzing FS added another man into the box (albeit just before the snap). Mankins did a great job of clearing Taylor out of the hole as he came on strong, but the backside of the hole was open, allowing the WLB to come in and make a solo tackle on Dillon before he could break into the secondary.

2nd and 7 NE 44

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, quick out, 1 yd.
Offense: 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Stone wide right, TE Watson down off RT, Faulk lone RB offset left.
Defense: 4-2-5 nickel, FS in box 5 yards off Watson, NB showing blitz left wing, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light stands up the RDE
Mankins sits back in reserve after the RDT slants defensive left
Koppen takes a step right before the RDT bounces off and pursues the catch
Neal and O’Callaghan double the LDT
LDE drops into coverage
Coverage: Watson works through a jam by the LDE and into the seam
Faulk steps into blitz protection but NB Prioleau turns around on the throw
Stone does a 10 yard hitch
Caldwell clears out deep, but doesn’t draw the RCB Rogers or SS Archuleta
Brown does a quick out, catches it cleanly, but can’t break away from the DBs coming down hard

Analysis: Washington read this play like a book – there’s not much more to it. The pocket was clean but Troy was quickly engulfed by the RCB and SS. If it was man coverage, the story would have been different and Caldwell would have drawn the RCB off the line, but there was no blocking for someone like Archuleta.

3rd and 6 NE 45

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, crossing pattern, 14 yds.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown right slot, Stone wide right, TE Watson standing right wing, Faulk RB to left of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, SLB tight over Watson, WLB showing blitz over LT, all 3 CBs press coverage.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins stands up the NT
Koppen sits back in reserve before helping out Neal
Neal stands up the LDE initially but is turned outside and falls to his knees, where Koppen steps in
O’Callaghan rides the blitzing SLB outside
Coverage: Faulk steps up through the line before dancing underneath the WLB and MLB
Watson does a slightly deeper crossing pattern than Brown, clearing out the SS
Caldwell beats the jam outside and goes up the sideline against the RCB
Brown beats the NB jam inside, cutting behind the WLB zone and beating the NB across the middle
Stone goes up the sideline against the LCB

Analysis: Brown found the void between the LB and safety zones, and got help from Watson on a similar pattern to stretch out the SS and somewhat the FS. All Brown had to do was cut across to beat the NB playing the outside, and Brady hit him from a clean pocket for the first down.

I was wary about O'Callaghan but early in this breakdown and my observations during the game lead me to be very optimistic about his play. I saw him really dominate LE Wynn for more than a few plays during Saturdays game.

I'm completely beat so that will be all for tonight, but expect a lot more tomorrow.

From the breakdown it seems that Neal can't get out of his own way.
Am I wrong?

He had problems keeping his feet last year, but looked better against Arizona last week.

1st and 10 Was 41

Result: Run, Dillon, right tackle, 1 yd.
Offense: WR Caldwell left, 2 TE, Graham down off RT, Watson down right wing, I-form backfield with Mills at FB and Dillon at RB.
Defense: 4-3, FS and LCB in box off right wing, SS comes up showing blitz over left wing, RCB 5 yards off Caldwell.
Blocking: Light overpursues across the WLB but turns back and gets a quick arm wrap
Mankins stands up the RDT on the nose but doesn’t have an angle and the RDT breaks free
Koppen cuts down the MLB in the second level
Neal pulls right but dives straight over the ducking CB trying to contain the edge
O’Callaghan drives the LDT left and releases when the angle is lost to prevent a hold
Graham gets driven back slightly by the LDE but battles to a stalemate
Watson chips the LDE before standing the SLB straight up on the edge
Mills doesn’t push the hole hard enough to prevent the FS from scraping off and getting Dillon

Analysis: The blocking and hole was there, but indecision on the part of Mills lead to Dillon sticking too long in the backfield. Mills took too many sidesteps working behind Graham, and also got caught up with the Watson/SLB block, but didn’t attack the hold hard enough after that. Instead of Mills leading Dillon through the hole, it was nearly the opposite. To make matters worse, Mills panicked after getting caught up with Watson and cut in front of Dillon to dive on the FS Taylor. If he had let Dillon keep his momentum on an unhindered path, there was a good chance Dillon could have broken past Taylor.

2nd and 9 Was 40

Result: PENALTY on NE-R.O'Callaghan, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 40 - No Play.
Offense: 2 WR, Brown wide left, Caldwell wide right, TE Graham down off LT, FB Mills strong side, Dillon RB.
Defense: 3-4, CB on Brown press coverage, CB on Caldwell 10 yards off.

Analysis: The RDT actually made the first move, starting forward but quickly moving back, triggering O’Callaghan on the opposite end of the line to stand up and drive forward.

2nd and 14 Was 45

Result: Pass, Watson from Brady, 5 yard in, 4 yds.
Offense: Shotgun 4 WR, Dillon wide left, Brown left slot, Graham right slot, Caldwell wide right, TE Watson standing left wing.
Defense: 3-4 nickel, SLB 5 yards off Graham, WLB 5 yards off Brown, both CBs 10 yards off, FS comes in to MLB on adjustments before backing off.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins slides behind Light in reserve
Koppen lets the NT spin into Neal and bounce back, where Koppen stands him up
Neal chips the NT before sliding outside in reserve
O’Callaghan rides the LDE outside
Coverage: Dillon clears out the RCB deep
Brown hooks against man coverage from the WLB
Watson goes half speed towards the idle RILB before quickly cutting underneath
Graham goes deep on the SLB, who sees the pass and breaks off to make the tackle
Caldwell clears out the LCB deep

Analysis: Watson hit openfield after breaking past the RILB, but the SLB kept an eye on Brady instead of committing to Graham up the seam and broke off nicely to make the warp-up tackle.

3rd and 10 Was 41

Result: Pass, Caldwell from Brady, Incomplete, 20 yard crossing pattern, pass dropped upon hit.
PENALTY on WAS-C.Rogers, Defensive Pass Interference, 17 yards, enforced at WAS 41 - No Play.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Stone motion wide right inside 3 paces, TE Watson down off RT, Faulk RB to right of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, NB 5 yards off Brown, RCB 10 yards off Caldwell, LCB showing blitz right wing.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside
Mankins and Koppen double the NT
Neal and O’Callaghan double the LDE
Watson picks up the edge blitz by the LCB
Faulk lowers into the blitzing SLB but the SLB keeps his footing and pressures Brady
Coverage: Caldwell does a 20 yard square-in but is hit from behind by the RCB as the pass comes in
Brown cuts underneath the NB and downfield
Stone goes deep on the LCB

Analysis: Stone was motioned inside when the LCB showed blitz, but Watson ended up picking it up as Stone went out on a route. Faulk had a good approach on his blitz pickup, but the SLB pulled to the side at the last second before heading straight for Brady, who got the pass off and on-target. The pass came into Caldwell’s numbers, but the RCB Rogers hit Caldwell from behind while knocking Caldwell’s arms down from the side, drawing the flag.

Sorry about the delay. Busy the last few days. I'm working on some more right now and will have it up later tonight.

1st and 10 Was 24

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 3 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown tight right, TE Graham standing right wing, TE Watson motion left wing to behind LT.
Defense: 4-3, WLB drops off after Watson motion, SLB showing blitz right wing, RCB shows blitz after motion, LCB 5 yards off Brown.
Blocking: Light and Mankins double the RDE
Koppen stands up the RDT at first but gets knocked off his stance slightly by Watson, allowing the RDT to hit Dillon and start a pile
Neal turns the LDT outside
O’Callaghan can’t get the angle on the LDE, who breaks off inside and helps on the stop
Watson slides through the hole and gets knocked backward into the run by the MLB but keeps his footing
Graham beats the SLB inside to get the angle, then stands him up
Caldwell goes for the SS after the RCB blitzes but can’t catch up to the run from behind
Brown freezes the LCB before getting a knock on the FS coming in

Analysis: The microscopic hole Dillon had up the middle because of Koppen and Watson’s inability to get drive on their defenders allowed defenders to scrape off their blocks and get a piece of Dillon as he tried to squeeze his way through the hole. The edges were sealed nicely except for the ineffective RCB blitzer. The unblocked WLB came up through the hole to hit Dillon, while Watson and Koppen were pushed back into the running lane to seal the play’s fate.

2nd and 7 Was 21

Result: Pass, Watson from Brady, 5 yard hitch, 11 yds.
Offense: WR Caldwell right, 3 TE, Luzar down left wing, Watson down off LT, Graham down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, RCB tight left wing, SS comes up over Watson but drops off before snap, FS in box next to SLB, LCB 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE out into open space before cutting him down
Mankins and Koppen double the RDT
Neal tries to drive-block the LDT, allowing the LDT to beat Neal inside and pressure Brady
O’Callaghan cuts the LDE but only gets one leg, allowing the LDE to get back up quickly
Coverage: Dillon comes through the line and turns underneath
Luzar clears out the RCB into the left flat with a quick out
Watson avoids the RDE at the line and finds a void outside of the SLB
Graham does a quick out against the WLB and FS
Caldwell does a quick out underneath the LCB

Analysis: All short yardage routes here, but they were effective in stretching zones and clearing out defenders. Once Watson found the void, Brady hit him with a strike against some semi-blocked pressure by the LDT. Watson turned around after the catch and plowed over the SS Archuleta, then carried the RCB a few yards downfield until Watson was spun down by the SLB.

Note: Watson got his left ring finger taped up after the play.

1st and 10 Was 10

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 3 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown wide right, TE Graham down off RT, FB Mills strong side, Dillon RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded defensive left, both CBs 5 yards off.
Blocking: Light slants right and stampedes Mankins, Koppen, and the RDT to the ground
Mankins stands up the RDT
Koppen cuts down the WLB ahead of the run
Neal turns the LDT outside
O’Callaghan seals the LDE outside
Graham seals the SLB outside
Mills cuts in front of Dillon in the backfield, and is driven back by the RDE on the edge
Caldwell blocks the RCB
Brown blocks the LCB

Analysis: The only sustained blocks on the play were on the right side of the line, where the LDT, LDE, and SLB were sealed off. Mills first started towards those, but suddenly cut left in the backfield, nearly stopping Dillon in his tracks. What was left of the OL was on the ground in front of Dillon, along with the RDT, MLB, and WLB. Since the left corner was contained by the RDE on Mills, Dillon chose to dive straight over the remnants of the stampede, where the FS and SS secured him on the ground.

2nd and Goal Was 7

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 2 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown tight right, 2 TE, Graham down off RT, Watson in motion right wing to QB and back, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3 nickel, LBs shaded defensive left, both CBs 5 yards off, MLB follows Watson in motion, FS in box behind MLB.
Blocking: Light ole’s the RDE on the edge
Mankins pulls right and kicks the MLB out
Koppen turns the RDT left and away from the run but loses the angle as Dillon is being stopped
Neal and O’Callaghan double the LDT
Graham chips the LDE before blocking the SLB
Watson seals the LDE on the edge
Caldwell cuts inside but can’t find a DB to block
Brown circles around but can’t catch up to the FS

Analysis: The OL did a great job of containing the entire DL, MLB, and SLB with sealing blocks, but both safeties and WLB were coming on strong in the box even before Dillon got the handoff. This gave both WRs no chance to come inside and get blocks on the safeties, and Dillon’s only other accessory blockers, the 2 TEs, were sealing the edge. With his holes clogged by the WLB, FS, and SS, he turned his body into the WLB and tried to drive for an extra yard or two.

3rd and Goal Was 5

Result: Pass, Watson from Brady, Incomplete, endzone corner fade, pass overthrown.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Stone wide left, Brown left slot, Caldwell wide right, TE Watson down off LT, Dillon RB to right of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 4-2-6 dime, DB showing blitz over LG, FS and SLB showing blitz over RT, NB press coverage, both CBs 5 yards off.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside but loses some ground
Mankins stands up the NT
Koppen and Neal double the LDE, then Neal breaks off to double the SLB
O’Callaghan keeps his ground against the blitzing and spinning SLB
Coverage: Dillon steps up in blitz protection before releasing into the right flat against the MLB
Stone stutters half-speed to the RCB where he cuts underneath and into the NB zone
Brown crosses with Watson and into the SS zone
Watson drives off the line against the DB, collides with the NB, and fades into the endzone
Caldwell fades into the endzone against the LCB

Analysis: Against a goal line zone, the Pats used criss-crossing Brown and Watson patterns to clear the SS out, collide the DB with the NB, and give Watson a void in the back corner of the endzone. All of that went smoothly, and Watson had just enough room and the height to win a jump ball, but Brady simply sailed the pass into the stadium wall.

Note: A flag was thrown on the play for defensive pass interference but was picked up as the pass was ruled uncatchable. The DB Prioleau dove at Watson’s legs in desperation, beat on the route, as the pass sailed over, but a Brady argument could not change the fact that pass was uncatchable – and then some.

4th and Goal Was 5

Result: Field Goal, Gostkowksi, 23 yds.

Score: New England 3 – Washington 0

Defensive Series #1 Punt

Contributor: Pats1
Time: 8:34 remaining in the first quarter
Statistics: 6 plays (2 run, 4 pass), 22 yards (8 run, 14 pass), time of possession was 2:10
Breakdown: 4 green plays (1 run, 3 pass) for 2 yds. (2 run, 0 pass), 2 red plays (1 run, 1 pass) for 20 yds. (6 run, 14 pass).

Kickoff: Espy from the Was 8, 20 yd return, Espy works around a block on Stone before Izzo and Wright shed the wedge and take him down.

1st and 10 Was 28

Result: Run, Betts, left guard, 6 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, 1 right, 1 motion right to left, 2 TE, 1 down off LT, 1 left wing, Betts lone RB.
Defense: 3-4, Seymour-Wilfork-Warren, Banta-Cain/Seau/Vrabel/Colvin, Samuel press RWR, Hobbs press LWR, Wilson and Harrison deep.
Blocking: Seymour is doubled by the LT and LG
Wilfork drives the C back but falls to the ground on his shed attempt
Warren sheds the RT on the backside but overruns the RB on his tackle attempt
Banta-Cain is doubled by both TEs Fauria and Cooley and kicked out
Seau shadows Betts until he cuts back through the line and Seau takes him down
Vrabel is driven to the ground by the RG
Colvin comes in free off the backside
Hobbs is blocked by the LWR
Harrison comes up on the edge before the TE Fauria breaks off and gives him a chip

Analysis: With Seymour and Banta-Cain occupying 4 blockers and for the most part holding their ground on the edge, Betts was forced to cut back downfield instead of turning the corner. Wilfork, against only the C, should have come off cleanly and stopped the play, but instead he was twisted to the ground. Seau avoided the LG coming off Seymour and made the stop on Betts coming through the hole. After the play, he would celebrate with a few fist pumps behind the line.

2nd and 4 Was 34

Result: Pass, Lloyd from Brunell, Incomplete, sideline fly, pass overthrown.
Offense: 3 WR, 2 right, 1 motion right to left, TE down off LT, Betts lone RB.
Defense: 3-4, Seymour-Wilfork-Warren, Banta-Cain/Seau/Vrabel/Colvin, FS Wilson follows RWR in motion, Hobbs and Samuel press coverage, Harrison deep.
Blocking: Banta-Cain blitzes and rides the LT outside
Seymouris stood up by the LG
Wilfork is stood up by the C
Warren rides the RG outside
Colvin blitzes and rides the RT outside
Coverage: Seau picks up the TE coming up the seam
Vrabel waits for the RB to come underneath and jams him
Wilson sits back against the LWR, who fakes a screen before taking a quick crossing route
Hobbs gets a lengthy jam on the slot WR
Samuel turns and runs in-stride with the RWR, stampeding him to the ground once the throw sails high

Analysis: Brunel had a perfect pocket with 5 OL versus 5 rushers. Lloyd had the only deep route on the play, and beat Samuel outside off the line. However, Samuel kept right with Lloyd in single coverage, and when Lloyd extended in an attempt for the overthrown pass, Samuel extended similarly to send both to the ground. Harrison was the lone deep safety and was sprinting over towards the play from the middle of the field.

3rd and 4 Was 34

Result: Pass, Cooley from Brunell, 15 yard out, 14 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, 1 left, 2 right, TE down off LT, Betts lone RB.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, Colvin-Seymour-Warren, Sanders/Davis/Vrabel, Hobbs-Wilson-Samuel press, C. Scott and Hawkins deep.
Blocking: Colvin blitzes but is stopped by the LT
Seymouris stood up by the LG
Warren is doubled by the C and RG
Vrabel rides the RT outside
Coverage: Davis nearly knocks the RB off his feet after he comes underneath
Sanders picks up Cooley on his 15 yard out
Hobbs jams the LWR on his quick out
Wilson gets a quick jam on the slot WR quick out
Samuel follows the RWR deep

Analysis: There wasn’t much Sanders could do in man coverage on Cooley here with C. Scott safety coverage 10 yards downfield. He took the safe route and played behind him, allowing Brunnel to lead Cooley to the sidelines. Instead of trying to step in front of the pass and letting Cooley get something after the catch, Sanders stayed off and tackled Cooley immediately after the catch. Pass rush was non-existent again.

Man, these write-ups are a rich trove of info!

Where else can you read,
What was left of the OL was on the ground in front of Dillon, along with the RDT, MLB, and WLB. Since the left corner was contained by the RDE on Mills, Dillon chose to dive straight over the remnants of the stampede, where the FS and SS secured him on the ground.

1st and 10 Was 48

Result: Run, Betts, up the middle, 2 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, 1 left, 2 right, TE down off RT, Betts lone RB.
Defense: 3-4, Seymour-Wilfork-Warren, Banta-Cain/Vrabel/Seau/Colvin, Colvin press on slot WR, Hobbs press LWR, Samuel 10 yards off RWR, Wilson and Harrison deep.
Blocking: Seymour sheds the LG and picks through the pile inside
Wilfork is stood up by the C and driven left by the RG, but turns the C back around and into the pile
Warren drags the TE inside before picking the pile
Banta-Cain holds the edge against the LT
Vrabel meets the slants RG in the hole but scrapes off to start a pileup
Seau sheds the RT and helps Vrabel on the pileup stop
Colvin comes in free off the backside
Hobbs is blocked by the LWR

Analysis: Seau and Vrabel both shed their blocks to converge in the hole on the RB. This would start a pileup, and with the help of Wilfork and Seymour, Betts would be stopped.

2nd and 8 Midfield

Result: Pass, Lloyd from Brunell, Incomplete, 20 yd. sideline pattern, pass thrown wide under pressure.
Offense: 2 WR right, 2 TE, 1 down off LT, 1 standing left wing, Betts lone RB.
Defense: 3-4, Seymour-Wilfork-Warren, Banta-Cain/Seau/Vrabel/Colvin, Hobbs sitting off left edge, Samuel press RWR, Wilson and Harrison deep.
Blocking: Banta-Cain rides the LT outside but beats him inside on the scramble and chases
Seymourbull rushes the LG back before breaking free inside and forcing Brunell to scramble
Wilfork works the C into the backfield, shadowing Brunell, then sheds and chases on the scramble
Warren is doubled by the RG and RT, but squeezes free on the scramble to add pressure
Coverage: Seau picks up the TE Fauria on a short crossing pattern
Vrabel drops back into a deep zone, and runs straight for Lloyd in front of the pass with arms up
Colvin gets a jam on the slot WR going up the seam before breaking off into a right flat zone against the RB
Hobbs releases the TE Cooley to Harrison across the middle
Samuel gets a quick jam on the RWR before sitting along the sideline at 10 yds.

Analysis: Very hard to tell what went on because of the camera angle, except for the line play. When Brunell tried to step up, he was met by Seymour shedding the LG, so he quickly backtracked and hooked around the RT against Warren, effectively losing the angles for all of his blockers and allowing all 4 Pats rushers to force him toward the sideline. Brandon Lloyd was standing along the sideline 20 yards downfield, and Brunell’s toss on the run would clear the jumping Colvin in the flat, the hands of Samuel 10 yards downfield, and finally fall wide of Lloyd. Vrabel did a good job of racing towards Lloyd, forcing the WR to lose his balance along the sideline to avoid Vrabel.

3rd and 8 Midfield

Result: Pass, Moss from Brunell, Incomplete, sideline fly, pass underthrown and dropped.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, 1 left, 2 right, 2 RB flanking Brunell in shotgun.
Defense: 3-3-5 nickel, Colvin-Seymour-Warren, Sanders/Davis/Vrabel, Hobbs-Wilson-Samuel press coverage, C. Scott and Hawkins deep.
Blocking: Colvin spins into the LT but rides him outside
Seymouracross the LG into the C
Warren tries to turn and squeeze through the C and RG, where he is pushed to the ground
Vrabel rides the RT outside before slipping to the ground behind Brunell
Coverage: Sanders picks up the LRB heading for the left flat
Davisjostles with the RRB coming through the line
Hobbs gets a good jam on the LWR on a short crossing route
Wilson jams the slot WR, who takes a 10 yard out
Samuel turns and chases the RWR going down the sideline
Hawkins comes up to the slot WR route before turning back downfield on the throw
C. Scott comes over from a deep zone on the throw

Analysis: Samuel was the only CB who didn’t try to jam his WR at the line in man coverage. He played inside on Moss down along the sideline, but ran across Moss’ face when the throw started to come in low and Moss stopped to come back for it. While in this process of stopping, it looked like Moss’ left leg gave way, throwing off his timing and causing the pass to hit Moss straight in his facemask and ricochet off.

4th and 8 Midfield

Result: Punt, Lonie, to the NE 4 then endzone, Faulk lets it bounce inside the 5 and into the endzone, 50 yd. punt, 0 yd. return.

It seems that this series Seymour is waking up a bit.

One thing I noticed after watching the game more closely is that Sully wasn't perhaps quite as improved as some on this board have been saying. He got blown off the ball like five yards on at least one play. On other plays, he kind of just stood at the line of scrimmage instead of really taking on a block. It seemed like he needed to drop all physical contact while diagnosing the play, and then he would simply run laterally. Kinda soft for a two gap player, IMO.

I'm sure he'll be around for a while, but I just can't believe the difference between him and Wilfork. Sully reminds me a lot of Steve Martin in how he plays. Wilfork was hitting people hard and knocking over linemen. Sully was a little bit soft against the back-ups.

I am interested to know what you guys think about Sully after more careful review.

Offensive Series #2 Touchdown

Contributor: Pats1
Time: 6:24 remaining in the first quarter
Statistics: 4 plays (5 run, 5 pass), 80 yards (12 run, 30 pass), time of possession was 1:17
Breakdown: 3 green plays (1 run, 2 pass) for 80 yds. (5 run, 75 pass), 1 red play (0 run, 1 pass) for 0 yds.

1st and 10 NE 20

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, Incomplete, quick out.
Offense: 4 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Watson right slot, Dillon wide right, TE Graham standing right wing.
Defense: 4-3, OLBs 5 yards off slot WRs, SS 10 yards behind WLB, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light cuts the RDE on the edge
Mankins sits in reserve
Hochstein bounces off the RDT, who drops into coverage
Neal stands up the LDT
O’Callaghan rides the LDE outside
Coverage: Caldwell does a quick slant past the RCB and into the WLB zone
Brown does a quick out into the left flat
Graham does a quick hook underneath the MLB
Watson is released by the zoned SLB into the right flat on a quick out
Dillon is disregarded by the LCB, watching Watson, on a sideline route

Analysis: Light cleared the passing lane by getting an adequate cut block on the RDE. Brady’s throwing motion seemed awkward and forced despite throwing from a clean pocket. The RCB was decisive and went for Brown upon the throw instead of waiting to see if it would go to his left, to Caldwell. The pass came in behind Troy, who had to stop, turn around, and extend his arms. With the RCB coming on strong, it appeared Troy took his eye off the ball for a second and brought his arms back in to brace for the hit, and the ball sailed past. The RCB Rogers knocked Brown to the ground shortly thereafter.

2nd and 10 NE 20

Result: Pass, Dillon from Brady, play action, dumpoff left under pressure, 39 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Watson left slot, Brown wide right, TE Graham down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded defensive left, SS 5 yards off slot, both CBs press coverage.
Blocking: Light rides the RDE outside, who loses his balance and falls forward into Light’s legs
Mankins chips the stunting RDT before releasing ahead of the dumpoff and repeatedly knocking the RCB downfield until sideline running room is lost
Hochstein stands up the LDT before coming out ahead of the dumpoff and knocking the FS down trying to pursue Dillon
Neal blocks the WLB into the ground in the second level
O’Callaghan stands up the LDE and shadows him in downfield pursuit
Graham stands up the blitzing SLB before releasing on the dumpoff
Caldwell is jammed at the line by the RCB but can’t get ahead of Dillon far enough to block after the catch
Watson clears out the SS deep before shoving him out of bounds beyond the tackle
Brown does a slant pattern to get the blocking angle on the LCB
Dillon took the play action and hit traffic from the LDT at the line, but turned around for the pass just in time

Analysis: The MLB would come on a delayed blitz between Graham and O’Callaghan, pressuring Brady to the ground after the pass. Nevertheless, Brady showed great patience staring down a blitzer, waiting for Dillon to turn for the pass. Dillon caught the pass amidst a crowded line, but then found open space as Hochstein and Brown both made good blocks to seal the inside. Mankins, Caldwell, and Watson would sprint and get some downfield hits on defenders. Graham released the blitzing SLB to pursue blocks downfield, but he was reluctant and allowed the SLB to blow right past him and eventually take down Dillon along the sidelines. Mankins got a few good hits on the RCB as they ran downfield, but lost his positioning when defenders forced Dillon into the sideline and the RCB Rogers helped on the stop with the SLB.

Note: Dillon got a faceful of dirt after the play, wiped his face with a towel, but did not return.

1st and 10 Was 41

Result: Pass, Brown from Brady, play action, deep post, pass underthrown, 36 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown wide right motion inside 3 paces, 2 TE, Watson down off LT, Graham down off RT, Maroney lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, RCB press coverage, LCB 10 yards off.
Blocking: Watson and Light ride the RDE outside
Mankins bounces the RDT off the line and then comes out to finish him off
Hochstein and Neal double the LDT
O’Callaghan chips the LDT before sliding outside and picking up the LDE
Graham chips the LDE inside before releasing into the flat
Coverage: Maroney flares into the right flat after the fake and is picked up by the SLB
Caldwell does a crossing pattern against the RCB
Brown goes up the seam before slipping behind the FS

Analysis: The off-tackle play fake was perfect, keeping all 3 LBs low and towards the fake. Both TEs stayed in to block, all but assuring a clean pocket after the play action. Brown was released deep by the LCB, who gave a big cushion in zone coverage. The Pats went high/low on the FS Taylor, cutting Caldwell in front and slipping Brown in back. The throw had a low trajectory, but the FS had his back turned and was trying to catch up. Brown reached down, hauled it in, and then rolled forward for the 36 yd. gain.

1st and 5 Was 5

Result: Run, Maroney, left guard, 5 yds., TOUCHDOWN.
Offense: 2 WR, Stone wide left, Caldwell wide right, 2 TE, Graham down off LT, Watson motion to QB and back to left wing, Maroney lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, SS in box over left wing, both CBs 5 yards off.
Blocking: Watson comes behind the line and traps the SLB
Graham drives the WLB off the edge
Light turns the RDE outside
Mankins avoids a stab at his legs by the RDT but can’t get the MLB in the second level
Hochstein gets his legs taken out from behind and falls on top of the RDT
Neal drives the LDT into the ground left
O’Callaghan drives the LDE into the ground left
Stone can’t catch up to the SS coming in so he gets a lick on the RCB in the endzone
Caldwell blocks the LCB

Analysis: Maroney’s hole was narrow because of all of the guys on the ground to his right, but he managed to squeeze right past the RDE trying to scrape off Light. He then slipped free of the SS Archuleta’s attempt from the side, and stumbled the rest of the way into the endzone.
