This should be a fun game to breakdown! I thought Vrabel looked AWESOME on defense, like he was trying to upstage Seau a bit. Nothing like some good competition in the middle. Rodney looked a bit tenative, which you might expect. He didn't take his late shots like he usually does right as the whistle is blowing, but my wife was about ready to cry about seeing him back on the field. Wright looked great, and fought thru a double team or two.

What can you say about the O-Line? AWESOME. This will probably be Watson's easiest game of the year, but with Brown as our only WR option of note, he'll get his chances. Caldwell??????????????????

I hope Cobbs makes the damn roster.

Analysis: The blitzing FS added another man into the box (albeit just before the snap). Mankins did a great job of clearing Taylor out of the hole as he came on strong, but the backside of the hole was open, allowing the WLB to come in and make a solo tackle on Dillon before he could break into the secondary.

Analysis: Washington read this play like a book – there’s not much more to it. The pocket was clean but Troy was quickly engulfed by the RCB and SS. If it was man coverage, the story would have been different and Caldwell would have drawn the RCB off the line, but there was no blocking for someone like Archuleta.

Analysis: Brown found the void between the LB and safety zones, and got help from Watson on a similar pattern to stretch out the SS and somewhat the FS. All Brown had to do was cut across to beat the NB playing the outside, and Brady hit him from a clean pocket for the first down.

I was wary about O'Callaghan but early in this breakdown and my observations during the game lead me to be very optimistic about his play. I saw him really dominate LE Wynn for more than a few plays during Saturdays game.

Analysis: The blocking and hole was there, but indecision on the part of Mills lead to Dillon sticking too long in the backfield. Mills took too many sidesteps working behind Graham, and also got caught up with the Watson/SLB block, but didn’t attack the hold hard enough after that. Instead of Mills leading Dillon through the hole, it was nearly the opposite. To make matters worse, Mills panicked after getting caught up with Watson and cut in front of Dillon to dive on the FS Taylor. If he had let Dillon keep his momentum on an unhindered path, there was a good chance Dillon could have broken past Taylor.

Analysis: The RDT actually made the first move, starting forward but quickly moving back, triggering O’Callaghan on the opposite end of the line to stand up and drive forward.

Analysis: Stone was motioned inside when the LCB showed blitz, but Watson ended up picking it up as Stone went out on a route. Faulk had a good approach on his blitz pickup, but the SLB pulled to the side at the last second before heading straight for Brady, who got the pass off and on-target. The pass came into Caldwell’s numbers, but the RCB Rogers hit Caldwell from behind while knocking Caldwell’s arms down from the side, drawing the flag.

Analysis: The microscopic hole Dillon had up the middle because of Koppen and Watson’s inability to get drive on their defenders allowed defenders to scrape off their blocks and get a piece of Dillon as he tried to squeeze his way through the hole. The edges were sealed nicely except for the ineffective RCB blitzer. The unblocked WLB came up through the hole to hit Dillon, while Watson and Koppen were pushed back into the running lane to seal the play’s fate.

Analysis: All short yardage routes here, but they were effective in stretching zones and clearing out defenders. Once Watson found the void, Brady hit him with a strike against some semi-blocked pressure by the LDT. Watson turned around after the catch and plowed over the SS Archuleta, then carried the RCB a few yards downfield until Watson was spun down by the SLB.

Analysis: The only sustained blocks on the play were on the right side of the line, where the LDT, LDE, and SLB were sealed off. Mills first started towards those, but suddenly cut left in the backfield, nearly stopping Dillon in his tracks. What was left of the OL was on the ground in front of Dillon, along with the RDT, MLB, and WLB. Since the left corner was contained by the RDE on Mills, Dillon chose to dive straight over the remnants of the stampede, where the FS and SS secured him on the ground.

Analysis: The OL did a great job of containing the entire DL, MLB, and SLB with sealing blocks, but both safeties and WLB were coming on strong in the box even before Dillon got the handoff. This gave both WRs no chance to come inside and get blocks on the safeties, and Dillon’s only other accessory blockers, the 2 TEs, were sealing the edge. With his holes clogged by the WLB, FS, and SS, he turned his body into the WLB and tried to drive for an extra yard or two.

Analysis: Against a goal line zone, the Pats used criss-crossing Brown and Watson patterns to clear the SS out, collide the DB with the NB, and give Watson a void in the back corner of the endzone. All of that went smoothly, and Watson had just enough room and the height to win a jump ball, but Brady simply sailed the pass into the stadium wall.

Note: A flag was thrown on the play for defensive pass interference but was picked up as the pass was ruled uncatchable. The DB Prioleau dove at Watson’s legs in desperation, beat on the route, as the pass sailed over, but a Brady argument could not change the fact that pass was uncatchable – and then some.

Analysis: With Seymour and Banta-Cain occupying 4 blockers and for the most part holding their ground on the edge, Betts was forced to cut back downfield instead of turning the corner. Wilfork, against only the C, should have come off cleanly and stopped the play, but instead he was twisted to the ground. Seau avoided the LG coming off Seymour and made the stop on Betts coming through the hole. After the play, he would celebrate with a few fist pumps behind the line.

Analysis: Brunel had a perfect pocket with 5 OL versus 5 rushers. Lloyd had the only deep route on the play, and beat Samuel outside off the line. However, Samuel kept right with Lloyd in single coverage, and when Lloyd extended in an attempt for the overthrown pass, Samuel extended similarly to send both to the ground. Harrison was the lone deep safety and was sprinting over towards the play from the middle of the field.

Analysis: There wasn’t much Sanders could do in man coverage on Cooley here with C. Scott safety coverage 10 yards downfield. He took the safe route and played behind him, allowing Brunnel to lead Cooley to the sidelines. Instead of trying to step in front of the pass and letting Cooley get something after the catch, Sanders stayed off and tackled Cooley immediately after the catch. Pass rush was non-existent again.

Analysis: Very hard to tell what went on because of the camera angle, except for the line play. When Brunell tried to step up, he was met by Seymour shedding the LG, so he quickly backtracked and hooked around the RT against Warren, effectively losing the angles for all of his blockers and allowing all 4 Pats rushers to force him toward the sideline. Brandon Lloyd was standing along the sideline 20 yards downfield, and Brunell’s toss on the run would clear the jumping Colvin in the flat, the hands of Samuel 10 yards downfield, and finally fall wide of Lloyd. Vrabel did a good job of racing towards Lloyd, forcing the WR to lose his balance along the sideline to avoid Vrabel.

Analysis: Samuel was the only CB who didn’t try to jam his WR at the line in man coverage. He played inside on Moss down along the sideline, but ran across Moss’ face when the throw started to come in low and Moss stopped to come back for it. While in this process of stopping, it looked like Moss’ left leg gave way, throwing off his timing and causing the pass to hit Moss straight in his facemask and ricochet off.

One thing I noticed after watching the game more closely is that Sully wasn't perhaps quite as improved as some on this board have been saying. He got blown off the ball like five yards on at least one play. On other plays, he kind of just stood at the line of scrimmage instead of really taking on a block. It seemed like he needed to drop all physical contact while diagnosing the play, and then he would simply run laterally. Kinda soft for a two gap player, IMO.

I'm sure he'll be around for a while, but I just can't believe the difference between him and Wilfork. Sully reminds me a lot of Steve Martin in how he plays. Wilfork was hitting people hard and knocking over linemen. Sully was a little bit soft against the back-ups.

I am interested to know what you guys think about Sully after more careful review.

Analysis: Light cleared the passing lane by getting an adequate cut block on the RDE. Brady’s throwing motion seemed awkward and forced despite throwing from a clean pocket. The RCB was decisive and went for Brown upon the throw instead of waiting to see if it would go to his left, to Caldwell. The pass came in behind Troy, who had to stop, turn around, and extend his arms. With the RCB coming on strong, it appeared Troy took his eye off the ball for a second and brought his arms back in to brace for the hit, and the ball sailed past. The RCB Rogers knocked Brown to the ground shortly thereafter.

2nd and 10 NE 20

Analysis: The MLB would come on a delayed blitz between Graham and O’Callaghan, pressuring Brady to the ground after the pass. Nevertheless, Brady showed great patience staring down a blitzer, waiting for Dillon to turn for the pass. Dillon caught the pass amidst a crowded line, but then found open space as Hochstein and Brown both made good blocks to seal the inside. Mankins, Caldwell, and Watson would sprint and get some downfield hits on defenders. Graham released the blitzing SLB to pursue blocks downfield, but he was reluctant and allowed the SLB to blow right past him and eventually take down Dillon along the sidelines. Mankins got a few good hits on the RCB as they ran downfield, but lost his positioning when defenders forced Dillon into the sideline and the RCB Rogers helped on the stop with the SLB.

Note: Dillon got a faceful of dirt after the play, wiped his face with a towel, but did not return.

Analysis: The off-tackle play fake was perfect, keeping all 3 LBs low and towards the fake. Both TEs stayed in to block, all but assuring a clean pocket after the play action. Brown was released deep by the LCB, who gave a big cushion in zone coverage. The Pats went high/low on the FS Taylor, cutting Caldwell in front and slipping Brown in back. The throw had a low trajectory, but the FS had his back turned and was trying to catch up. Brown reached down, hauled it in, and then rolled forward for the 36 yd. gain.
