Jules is an inside receiver who can play outside. LaFell is a complementary outside receiver. Because of the (lack of) development of the 3 second year guys we had to make do.
Whether it's Stevie, a draft pick, or Dobson develops, we badly need an outside guy at least as good as LaFell. We had a lot of times last year that DCs could single LaFell and squeeze the middle and shut us down. Thankfully, 12, 87, 11 and Josh are so good we could scheme and execute around it enough. But we REALLY need a league average (or better) outside receiver to balance it out.
I agree with you to an extent, but not completely. I think Edelman has turned into a good outside receiver (and a great inside receiver). And I think LaFell is more than complementary. He and Brady have as good a chemistry and Brady has had with anybody outside the numbers since Moss. Sure, that doesn't say much, but LaFell almost hit 1000 yards in spite of a slow start. He's not a burner or field-stretcher, but he's reliable, and that's more important to us.
Where I think we need more help on the outside is behind LaFell. If he misses time, we're screwed out there right now. Either Dobson has to pan out, or we need another body in. Though I think we can get by with Amendola + Edelman. One reason I think Amendola is that he's a little bit bigger, and between him & Edelman, you can make do, so Danny gives you a little depth for two guys. Unlike Welker, these guys are not purely slot receivers.
