Day 4, 2nd practice

The Patriots just concluded their afternoon practice on the fourth day of training camp. The workout was held in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, and was the team's seventh overall practice since camp started on July 28.

Some quick notes:

* Quarterback Tom Brady was not present, leaving Matt Cassel to run the offense for the third straight workout.

* Receiver Reche Caldwell had a fine practice, catching everything thrown his way. On one 7-on-7 drill held inside the 10-yard line, Caldwell made three solid touchdown catches.

* At one point, defensive coordinator Dean Pees huddled the defense and it appeared he wasn't happy with what was taking place on the field. The unit responded to whatever Pees said, as defensive backs Ellis Hobbs, Eugene Wilson and Vernell Brown, and linebacker Eric Alexander, all batted down passes near the goal-line.

* There was plenty of work on special teams, with players working on downing punts inside the 10-yard line. Rookie running back Laurence Maroney showed a knack for the skill, as did cornerback Hank Poteat, with both drawing praise from the coaches.

* None of the nine players on the physically unable to perform list returned to practice. Offensive tackle Matt Light, who didn't participate in the morning workout, returned for the afternoon session.
Once again happy with Caldwell.
