As of March 2nd the Patriots have a total of $156,579,147 in total cap commitments. $151,961,328 is devoted to 66 signed or tendered players. The Patriots have $4,616,819 in dead money. $151,961,328 + $4,616,819 = $156,579,147. I am projecting that the Patriots will make tender offers to all 5 ERFAs. The 2015 League cap is $143.28 million. The Patriots 2015 adjusted cap number is $144,578,554. $143,280,000 (League Cap) + $5,442,054 (2014 Ending Cap Space + $1,184,000 Aaron Hernandez salary grievance credit - $5,143,970 (LTBE/NLTBE adjustment) = $144,578,554. $156,579,147 minus $144,578,554 = $(12,000,063) overage.

is this actually accounting for the rules of 51?
it seems like we're way over, pending revis of course, but will that number come down using the rule?

Yes, I am accounting for the rule of 51.

For those who are fretting about how the Patriots get below the cap and sign the important FA's and extend Revis, here is something that you can play with.

They do have the cap still at the projected $145 million instead of the just announced $143 million, so you have to take that in account.

I first cut and resigned Revis at $16,000,000 per year for 4 years with 75% guaranteed. Then restructured some others and was able to fit most of the important players to the roster.
If you try to be realistic, then you can see how it can be done. But don't forget, you won't be dealing with agents when you do this. :D

Wow. It's a good thing Revis didn't have an agent pushing you for a better deal. Sheesh. $2 million a year more than Richard Sherman AND 75% guaranteed. I'm not even sure Oakland would offer that... :)

I've always been generous with other peoples money.

oh yeah, I see it now.
I guess I should look past the first line..........

anyway, I have a follow up question ---- I guess dennard somehow hit some escalators to pimp his salary up to 1.5m this coming year, but we apparently only save 1m by cutting him?
are the escalators some kind of guaranteed money that's not listed -- what's the .5m discrepancy?

edit: just saw the note -- pretty interesting

January 6, 2014 update An eligible player will qualify for the Proven Performance Escalator in his fourth League Year if: (1) he participated in a minimum of 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays in any two of his previous three regular seasons; or (2) he participated in a "cumulative average" of at least 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays over his previous three regular seasons. Since Dennard played in 62% of the defensive snaps in 2013 and in 53% of the defensive snaps in 2012 he has qualified for the Proven Performance Escalator in 2015.

Because a player with a $510,000 salary would replace Dennard on the Top 51 list lowering net cap savings.

FYI - I just added "using the Top 51 rule" to make it clearer
