Apparently, Hoover felt that Sullivan might have made a good FBI contact . . . until he became involved with the Patriots.

The Globe has the rather fascinating story.

They have several stories based on information released by the FBI (note: all the folks on whom the files were kept are deceased, so don't expect any juicy tidbits on Belichick :) ).

I have heard Hoover taught BB a thing or two about espionage.
